Ship Reviews

Just returned from 7 day cruise Barcelona to Malaga. We had sailed on Legend in the Spring from Rome to Venice so obviously that was a good trip as we rebooked! First surprise was that Windstar upgraded our room. The check-in process was smooth, as was the disembarkation. The upgraded room was clean and everything is very well set-up. We ate in all the restaurants (including room service one early morning) during our trip and found all the staff helpful and polite - nothing was ever too much trouble. One point is that Candles restaurant has a low roof in the main section so can be noisy if you are next to a large table (out doors is fine). We enjoyed the food everywhere on the ship. We used the spa and gym - can be slightly expensive but probably in line with cruise ships generally. It is a small ship so that affects the entertainment options - there are usually different things going on but you are not going to see The Royal Shakespear Company here.

This was our first time on Windstar, and it was certainly a treat, staff were friendly and inviting. Food quality and venues were about par. We were actually looking to do another cruise out of Tahiti at the end of the month, but flights back home were limited. We really wanted to use the swim platform! We cannot say enough good things about our experience, and look forward to our next cruise. Our entire street now wants to go on a cruise with Windstar! Did I mention the laundry service? It was well worth the few extra dollars along with their drink/internet/gratuity package. We will never do a large ship again, this was our own private yacht for 8 nights. Bring friends along, if you want to have people to talk too, many groups of 4 and more, they were all fun but mostly stuck to themselves. We were okay with that.

First Windstar cruise and we really enjoyed the smaller size ship. Majority of crew bent over backwards to make the trip enjoyable. Had a bad experience with the Future Cruise person who was very rude and condescending, but this was the exception as it related to the crew. Cabin size was good and the cabin service was spot on. Food was over hyped. Should really not promote the connection with James Beard as food was simply average when compared to any premium cruise line...was hoping for amazing food at every turn but that simply was not the case. Specialty restaurants were good with Cuatro 44 being the best. Tried Candles on the stern of the ship but service was very slow and we waited over 10 minutes after being seated for anyone to acknowledge us (take a drink order). All this being said would probably cruise Windstar again based on itineraries.

Absolutely recommend. Fabulous! 10/10. Just returned from our first Windstar cruise (this is our 8th cruise overall). Edinburgh, around the UK, to Amsterdam. The crew is outstanding; from the head chef, captain, activities director, room attendants, and waiters, we couldn’t have had any better or friendlier service. This was by far the best food and largest/nicest room we’ve had on any cruise. (We always get a regular balcony room.). Our room had a walk-in closet, double sink, walk-in shower, sofa and 2 chairs. Bed was very comfortable. Food was excellent. The two included speciality restaurants had some different options in a smaller setting (reservations required, but no charge). Steak at the specialty restaurant was exceptional. Spanish restaurant had some great menu items (tapas, lamb shanks, seafood) and we went twice so we could try more things! The dining room had many choices and was also very good. There was a variety of seafood options every night. I was very surprised by the many main dish options on the lunch buffet. Each day the food had a different country theme - Scottish, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, French, etc. Breakfast buffet had such a variety, I never got to try everything. You could also order several menu options at breakfast or lunch. I counted 11 types of bread/pastries on the buffet one morning. The amount of food options at each meal was amazing for the small ship size. Everything was top quality. There were also food options at the Star Grill and the Yacht Club. The Yacht Club had food during the day until dinner. After that there’s 24 hour room service. (It’s been our experience on a river boat cruise that there is only one dining option/venue, so this was great!) The small ship size (300+ passengers) was perfect, never crowded. And no casino was nice. The only thing lacking was a little more variety for the evening entertainment, which we have found is typical for the smaller ships. The ship’s musicians did a great job, though. And the ship’s crew put on quite a talent show - lots of laughs and it was my favorite evening! A different singing group came on board to perform the last night when we were in Amsterdam. We booked several of the ship’s excursions and they were all very good. Giant’s Causeway and the drive along the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland were spectacular. We also booked some tours on our own, which was a bit stressful when we got into port 30 minutes late due to the local port delaying us. The ship’s excursions are going to wait for you - Trip Advisor or private ones may not, and we nearly missed our tour. But we had no trouble getting right off the ship and getting a taxi. The captain kept us advised about the delay and we immediately went to the exit and waited for arrival. There is definitely an advantage to booking through the ship, though they may be a little more expensive. On one of the days we had rough seas (our ship wasn’t very affected, but the small tenders were), and we couldn’t safely get to port on the tenders, so the excursions on the ship were automatically refunded (and we did some scenic cruising instead). The crew went above and beyond to schedule more things for us to do on the ship that day. There were informative port talks each evening prior to the next day’s port. Embarkation and disembarkation was a breeze with a small ship. Average age of cruisers is probably retirement age. In talking to some of the passengers, there were many that had been on a lot of Windstar cruises (15 for one couple) and they kept coming back. There were over 50 passengers that were continuing on the next cruise on the same ship. We understand why. It was all very excellent. As far as our booking experience, it all went well. Their website could have a bit more information and be more intuitive. There were several places online that said “photo coming soon.” The website was the only thing that we thought was not as good as other cruise lines we have used. The bad? The weather! The beginning port had to be moved to a short drive away, but Windstar emailed us and provided a free shuttle to get there. (Unseasonable winds were so bad, that even Edinburgh castle closed.) We also had to skip a port (referenced above), but again the Windstar crew took care of us. The weather was not in our control, but we were in good hands. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! It was a wonderful experience, and we hope to return soon! Maybe a Mediterranean cruise next time so we can use the watersports platform. The sea water in the UK is too cool for that.

Entertainment

A day on board your Windstar ship is a day of choices, all of them good. Perhaps you’ll begin with a relaxing massage in World Spa by Windstar. Or maybe an invigorating workout in the Fitness Center. Even better, why not both? After a sumptuous lunch in Veranda, make a splash from the Watersports Platform off the ship’s stern. Everything you can think of for fun in the water is there — swimming, kayaking, sail-boarding, even water skiing. And it’s all complimentary, of course. Sun yourself on deck, take a dip in the whirlpool, then catch up on email ororder a cheese plate for your stateroom or suite. After dinner, dance to live music in the Lounge. This is your yacht, so of course you’re welcome on the Bridge, where the Captain and officers are delighted to share charts, routes, and vistas with you.

As you prepare for another amazing Windstar day, enjoy a nightcap anywhere you like — on deck, in the Lounge, or why not let us bring it to your suite or stateroom? Your day ends just as it began, blissfully.
