A group of 10 friends went on the Windstar Star Legend Aegean Sea Odyssey via the Corinth Canal cruise. We had great weather for the 8 nights we traveled in October. Luxury but not the highest end. Its all inclusive option does not include excursions like some other cruise lines; so it can get pricey with add-ons. Best features of this ship are the accommodations from the 300 person limit, size of the cabins, 4 restaurant choices, medical facility, spa and multiple lounges depending on your entertainment needs. Staff ratio is impressive with 200 staff for 300 customers. For the most part, we found the staff enjoyed working there, had great camaraderie, and wanted to assure that all the guests were having a great experience. Special shout out to Jan, Edwin, and Arletta from the food and beverage management. They made sure that our party of 10 didn’t experience repeated bad reservation issues due to the ship’s lack of an automated restaurant reservation system. Sahwen and Leon from Amphora restaurant provided great service. Sahwen made sure that the kitchen knew that two people in our group had allergies. He also provided us the following day’s menu so that we could preselect our meals with our allergies in mind. Activities and Entertainment was hit or miss. The Windstar exclusive Ephesus dinner in Turkey; within the ruins and with live classical music, was one of the highlights of the trip. The BBQ night on the pool deck, and the Crew show were both entertaining and solidified the family feel of this voyage. The band Appaloosa that played nightly was excellent and always tried to engage the customers. The excursions were the disappointment of this trip, especially for the price. It seemed that the excursions were outsourced and not managed directly by Windstar. The excursions that did go well usually had Windstar staff accompany the tour guides. We had a really bad tour guide in Mykonos, who not only skipped specific sites but could barely be heard throughout the day. My recommendation, especially for docked ports, is to purchase TripAdvisor/viator/costco excursions. The worst part of this Windstar cruise was their new computer system (for pre-cruise) and the lack of a computerized restaurant reservation system (everything was manual). The two specialty restaurants required reservations. The manual process started at the check-in booth at embarkment in Athens, prior to boarding the ship. The staff couldn’t correct a mistake made by the person in the booth until the staff all returned to the ship to check “the list”. Communication of the staff at the port, to the reservation desk, to the actual restaurant ruined a 51st anniversary dinner for a couple in our party of 10 in the specialty restaurant Candles. They sat 5 couples in tables of 2 each so that we were all split up and the food came out at all different times. And this was after repeated confirmation with many of the reception personnel that we were a party of 10 and would like to be seated together for this special occasion. The food and beverage management acknowledged and apologized for ruining our friend’s 51st anniversary and hosted a special private Mediterranean surf and turf dinner as a re-do. It was impressive how the food and beverage management dealt with correcting a mistake. If they didn’t help our group of 10 navigate reserving future dinner tables that accommodate our group, I believe our experience would be different. For all the other couples and even my husband, they would all highly recommend Windstar. I tend to coordinate events for my family and friends, from groups of 2- 20 + people. Was asked if I would recommend this cruise line. For small groups of 8 or less, I would say definitely but book your own excursions. For midsize groups of 10 or more, I would tell them that the restaurants may not be able to sit everyone at the same table for dinners. If they don’t mind not being together, then I would recommend highly. However, I think that defeats the whole purpose of traveling with your group of friends.
My friend and I just returned from an eleven-day cruise of Spain, Gibraltar and Casablanca, on WindStar's Star Legend, and it was a wonderful experience. Every crew member we encountered was friendly and upbeat, and the services we received, particularly from our dining room waiter, Fadli, and our room steward, Syukur were second to none. After a few days we felt like we were part of the WindStar family. Our stateroom was very spacious, in terms of cruise ship rooms, and the bathroom was beautiful. It was the first time that I could take a shower on a cruise ship and actually have room to move around. A luxury. Whereas the ship offered two dining options in smaller restaurants, the main dining room was, in my opinion, the most lavish and the finest dining experience of the three. The food was excellent, and the choice of options were abundant. If you didn't find any of the daily meal entre options appealing, there was always basic entre options such as steak or salmon to choose from. After a couple days I found myself starting my evening meal with both a salad and a bowl of soup, before feasting on my entre and then dessert. With all the food that I consumed, it is fortunate that I logged over 12,000 steps a day, otherwise they might have had to roll me off the ship at the end of our cruise. As for the ports, we were offered very nice touring options, though on two days, we just wandered the town on our own, enjoying the shops, restaurants, and bars (coffee or liquor). The only disappointed was Casablanca, an exceptional movie, however not an exceptional vacation destination. Fortunately, the previous night's port talk had accurately described what we could expect, so we were not surprised. Overall, my friend and I had an amazing eleven days that will be stored in our memories forever.
As always, Windstar has absolutely incredible service. The crew goes out of their way to be helpful and friendly. Even crew members I didn't think I knew, knew my name! I was worried about a 16 night winter cruise in the Mediterranean but it was fine. The weather was chilly but dry in all but one port. Winds kept us out of Genoa and it was a little bumpy on the last night. Anna's incredible Destination Services team booked and rebooked excursions as plans changed. With only 99 guests, some excursions had to be cancelled. They did a great job. The port talks were very helpful. Some suggestions: I love that they now use reusable water bottles rather than those disposable. BUT the large bottles aren't practical to take on excursions. Bring your own bottle until Windstar starts supplying a couple of smaller ones. Entertainment: The band and the singers were very good. I'd like to see more activities, especially on sea days.
