This 12 day Baltic cruise on the Silver Spirit was like being on a brand new ship. It recently went through a 47 day refurbishment at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo from March 22- May 8 2026. This shipyard was the original builder of the ship and the shipyard that cut the ship in half to add 49 feet to it in 2018. Now the ship has new SALT venues, new carpeting, new upholstery, refreshed the pool deck, new equipment in the fitness center, and a new dining facility next to the pool called Riviera. All suites have been redone with new furnishings and refreshed interiors. This was our 31st cruise and the 2nd with Silversea. We have sailed on Oceania, Seabourn, Azamara, Viking river and ocean and once on Princess for the Black Sea. We rate Silversea the best of all the ships we have been on. The food is outstanding and the crew on the ship are the best we have ever encountered. There are 7 dining rooms on the ship ( 2 you pay extra for)and you will find on many to enjoy. Our cabin was a deluxe veranda cabin and it was plenty large enough to store everything plus having a walk in closet. We booked our next cruise onboard for next year-a 14 day cruise to Alaska.
I’m not sure how so many people can be on the same cruise and have such different experiences. From the second we walked on board we felt like family. We’ve been sailing with SS since 2010 and think it’s still the best. We were literally first on board. Embarkation took about 3 minutes. Just long enough to take our credit card number and hand us our key cards. We were greeted with flutes of champagne and caviar on blini. They also had other cocktails and drinks. We don’t intentionally look for the bad. We are on vacation and are having a good time. People that don’t do their homework and then blame SS for not being what they expected or aren’t like “other lines” should blame themselves. SS has never been a young crowd. They’ve never had lots of outdoor dance parties. Most people are in bed by 11p. Let’s be honest. Hallways are empty after the show. The food was great. Did I like everything? Nope, but can’t win them all. We ate in all the restaurants and the one my least favorite, the Asian fusion one that’s being replaced by SALT. We normally have special meals made for us when we are in atlantide. We just talk to the M’d on the first day and the days we are in atlantide our meals are taken care of. We loved the singer in silver note. Loved her so much we canceled a night at the grill and begged to get a second night. It’s so annoying and disrespectful to go to a restaurant with a singer and then people try to talk over the music. Why go to a show dinner and not enjoy the show? Go to the MDR and talk. The food was delicious in silver Note. Served hot , and promptly but not rushed. The people that say the wine is “sub par” or “grocery store wine”. If your that particular about wine order off the special wine menu. There were several we liked annd several we didn’t, but when we found a favorite we took a picture of the label and then just requested it where ever we were. We even had wine bottles brought to the suite. We don’t like the new champagne LeRoy, so we have the butler take it out and replace it with another like the Italian rose’ sparkling wine. Instead of looking for something to complain work with the crew to find a solution. It’s easy. All of the food we had was cooked properly. Served hot. And well seasoned. You’ve just got be positive, ask for what you want in advance and be reasonable. Our butler came around the first day we requested a few things for the room and told her what we wanted as snacks for the room and what beverages we wanted stocked in the frig and by the time we got back from dinner the first night everything had been taken care of. The staff is great most really enjoy being there and helping out. JP arranged special meals, special dessert requests, and honored our request to have the same table and same waiter when dining at atlantide. Would I recommend Silversea? Yes! I have! Would I sail again? Yes, we have three more booked already. We actually got off the spirit in Lisbon and two days later got on the shadow for another 10 days. Don’t like Silversea, do me and yourself a favor and sail with another line. It’s a vacation, ENJOY IT.
Although most recent reviews have been critical , overall I would say we had an enjoyable trip. We usually sail Seabourn , so have expectations of 5 star service and ambiance. The ship is now in drydock for a major refit (introducing their SALT brand dining I think, plus other upgrades) Firstly the the positive. The staff were all excellent : knew our names , and made good eye contact and offered genuine engagement. In all locations , especially Atlantide and Panorama bar it was easy to get responsive , prompt and professional service. The cabin/ suite was fine although I hope they remove the bath... the current configuration is quite cramped. (we were Superior Veranda on 9) Despite the refit , I thought the ship looked immaculate : not a spec of rust... though I suppose the decor could be described as "traditional". We loved the outdoor sofas and space adjacent Panorama lounge (9) and Arts Cafe (8)... Always quiet and sheltered from the wind : A comparable space sadly missing on Seabourn. Atlantide was a lovely warm spacious welcoming main dining room. Another big plus for us was adherence to the dress code. There really were a majority of men in jackets , and pretty much everyone had a "collared shirt". Now the not so good. Entertainment : the singer in Silvernote was poor. Most guests just continued their conversations and ignored her. The "imported" main theatre shows were (in my opinion) poor : a magician and a "celebrity pianist". The ship singers/dancers (3 boys , 3 girls) put on a good basic show on two nights ...the usual motown/ film songs. the overall ethos is fairly quiet, which suited the demographic. Although we had one deck party, which was reasonably lively, I would have liked more outdoor music events/ sailaway parties But the seas were always quite rough, which may be a valid excuse. Now the food. We are both vegetarians. Of course on day 1 the chef promised "everything is possible", and the blurb on the menus makes absurd pretentious promises of "excellence, passion , precision and creativity " . The reality was a far cry from that. To be fair we had a few excellent meals thanks solely to the initiative of the maitre'd ("JP") , who persuaded the chef to make us specials. The offerings on the standard menu were frankly mediocre : mainly pasta/ risotto or one evening a huge chunk of half cooked squash (pumpkin) sitting lonely on a plate. Two attempts at "variants" ended in awful offerings, and should never have been allowed out of the kitchen. We we told the menus were mandated and designed by "Head Office". (To concur with a suggestion from another review , this person really should be sacked.). We had no reply to our complaint to the restaurant manager. We sensed the dead hand of the accountants. For example the bread at breakfast and dinner was sub-supermarket standard. Some of the daily changing wines were fine , others , very "supermarket " level. A tiny detail , but boarding the ship on day one we were offered just half a glass of some "cocktail" in the corridor rather than free pouring champagne.... Would we go on Silversea again? It is tricky Overall we would have preferred more of the party like events with live band and dancing that Seabourn are good at providing, but the service, dress code and space on Silversea are a big plus.
