Just got back from a 8 day cruise out of galveston to cozumel, costa maya and roatan. This is my review of the ship. Its been a long time since we sailed on a large cruise ship. (10+ years) thinks have changed a lot. heres what i have to say Main dining room food. Not as good as it used ot be but still vergy good. 3 out of 4 stars. some hits, some misses. service was excellent. Specialty dining. we ate at 3 speciality dining rooms (had the 3 meal package). jamie olivers was great. 4 stars. definetly worth the cost but YMMV 150 central park was good but not great. Id give it 3 stars. probably worth the cost but izuma was nothing special. 2 stars . isnt worth the price IMHO. Windjammer buffet. excellent. there was a wide vsriety of choices and if you didnt liek something there was always something else to try. I recommend the lamb rogan josh if its available. just be aware its not spice at all which i though was a good thing. solarium buffet was very good. we only ate breakfast there (every day but 1) but it was worth it and much less crowded than the windjammer shows. the musical columbus was excellent as was voices. the ice show i though was just ok. Im hard of hearing and had the assisted listening device which helped somewhat. the pools were very good. I wish the solarium had one too. the hot tubs were great, according to my watch they were set for 98 degrees which is fine in the tropics. if your on the non alcoholic drink plan you get a refillable cup. they need more self service machines. My biggest complaint was the casino. the smoke smell was very bad. and the non smoking casino was VERY small. in this day and age there should be qa much large rnon smoking casino. In addition the balck jack tables have differnt odds depending on bet size. under $25 they pay 6-5 on a black jack instead of 3-2. That really suck and turned me off from playing it.m the roulette tables were VERY crowded and hard to get space at. we got the key package. It cast $5 more a day over just the internet package. It made getting off the ship much easier,no having to hang out in a lounge til your turn to leave at the end of the cruise. they borading lunch it gave us was excellent. Internet worked well except in out cabin. It kept cutting out and required turning off wifi and turning it back on and then it would only work for a few minutes before cutting out. that only happened in our cabin ,the rest of the ship it worked fine. If your in cozumel I highky recommend the barefoor beach cooking class. theres no real beach or beach time (very murky water) but the actual cooking takes up most of the excursion time anyways.
For the longest, I'd wanted to sail one of RCL's Oasis-class ships and, after six days aboard the Harmony, I came away with so many mixed feelings, I'll probably look elsewhere for my next sailing. WHAT I LIKED RCL's neighborhood concept is a good way to offer different vibes (and hopefully distribute crowds). I took a balcony cabin overlooking Central Park, my favorite of the "neighborhoods". Although the room was well laid out and tastefully decorated, I'll probably revert to an ocean view cabin next time out. Central Park is relatively quiet, but loud music does waft from other areas of the ship, making an afternoon nap a bit of a challenge. FOOD - SPLIT DECISION Food in the Main Dining Rooms ranged from good to not acceptable. One evening, I dined on New York Strip steak that was so tough and gristly I was lucky to get four bites out of it. Other evenings offered better experiences, but I can't help but believe that RCL has cut corners in the galley, making the cruise experience less of a value. The Windjammer Marketplace, like other cruise ship buffets, is about as relaxing as the Faber College cafeteria in Animal House, and food selections varied little from one day to the next. Fortunately, other options exist (the Solarium Bistro is a good alternative). SERVICE Here's where RCL excelled, with personable and efficient people throughout the ship. Although I miss having my room serviced twice a day, my room steward, Makiel, was excellent, responding to any requests and always giving a friendly greeting when I saw him in the hallway. DEBARKATION Debarkation is never fun, but RCL cleared the ship sooner than anticipated, and the Port of Galveston and US Customs did their part to get us on our way in a timely manner. CONCLUSION Megaships are not for everybody and they're probably not for me, who's come down on the less-is-more side. At my age, I could do with fewer gimmicks and bells/whistles and stronger basics (especially when it comes to food). PS - If 3 1/2 stars were available, that's what I'd rate it.
