It was a spontaneous, last minute decision to cruise. Two days prior. We live near Seattle so it was also easy. We're in our mid 50's and truly not big complainers, so take our criticism for what it is - just an honest review. Overall we give this cruise a B+ and we plan on cruising with Royal again. Walked right onto the ship upon arrival and then upon returning to Seattle we walked right out to our luggage, customs, and the shuttle to our parked car with only a two minute wait in line. Very organized. This was our first inside room bc it was last minute. We usually have a balcony midship or aft. We were in room forward. Very close to the solarium. We had a little bit of gentle rocking and hardly any noise! Very quiet. I get motion sickness very easily and this location was great. The room was perfect for the two of us. Nice bathroom. No yucky shower curtain. We slept great in the total darkness. Our room steward got us robes and a fan and we were very happy going back and forth to the gorgeous views and large hot tubs in the solarium. We had a great nap in one of their clam shaped loungers. The bed was nice - not too firm. Just right. The pillows and duvet were poofy and luxurious. The room was spotless. In fact the entire ship was spotless. We've been on both Princess and Carnival (never again - not clean, very noisy, people smoking in nonsmoking areas - and on balconies - lots of pot, too, lots of out of control and unsupervised kids and adults just totally partying hard, many hardly dressed, too!). Princess was nice. But too bland. Carnival was just too everything! Royal Caribbean Alaska was just right. We met people from all over the world and the country. It was a very interesting group of people. The well defined areas meant everyone could find a place to meet their needs and mood. The ship design is perfect. Truly perfect. We never felt crowded except when people showed up at primetime to eat at the buffet. There were lines. Easy to avoid. Also, people seemed to congregate in front of the shopping area near the pizza. Always busy there. Maybe bc the pizza is so popular it just puts a lot of people together. The crew were friendly, helpful, and provided consistent service without acting overworked or stressed. Their pleasantness helped us unwind and enjoy ourselves. The buffet has a nice selection of fruit, vegetables, and salad. The variety of entrees is nice. The Indian food was really good. The Greek lamb and other Mediteranean themed dishes were good. They always had rice, pasta, burgers, fries available, too. You might not find your favorite food, but there were plenty of solid options done well. Chops was good. My filet mignon was cooked a perfect medium rare with a bluish center. Amazing. Also, they served the best lobster cognac bisque I've ever had. Surprisingly, British Jamie Oliver had a very good penne vodka and lemon merinque cheesecake (not too sweet or heavy). The Music Hall is another great place to play billiards (small tables though) and hang out. Beautiful space. We also enjoyed listening to the pianist, the violinist, the Spanish guitarist at Schooners Bar and Vintages Bar. Kids could sit with their parents. They didn't push drinks. You could sit without ordering anything. The vibe was really welcoming. They also had fun name-that-tune and other quiz type activities. Karaoke was fun and the crowd was encouraging. The end of the cruise top karaoke "stars" performed in the Royal Theatre and it was fun and impressive. Our fellow cruisers seemed pretty happy without needing to be outrageous or demanding. Maybe it's due to the Alaska itinerary? Our previous cruises were to the Caribbean and Mexico. The not so great - 1. desserts were ridiculously tiny - we understand trying to eliminate waste, but they were miniscule 2. if you're into chocolate - forget it, not a lot of variety in both the buffet or dining rooms 3. the ice cream at the buffet is low quality 4. the chocolate chip cookies are thin and hard as a rock! 5. the bread at the buffet was boring, just white flour in different shapes 6. Italian night was sad, red sauce was thin and flavorless, not a lot of variety, no meatballs or sausage 7. everyone said the shows weren't that great, we've decided forget the shows - we want music - cover bands and a variety of performers that can do all kinds of music - it's so much fun to sing and clap with the audience 8. MUSIC: our biggest complaint, and one that many other cruisers and crew we spoke to agreed with - AWFUL and everywhere, they played the same kind of soft, upbeat crap in every location across the ship, it was so annoying, most of it we'd never even heard before, there was no variety at all, in the solarium they said it was a relaxing place - same crappy music as the pools, the hallways, the bars, the climbing wall, the art area, and the Music Hall! If you're at a venue called the Music Hall you should be playing a wide variety of music all days long! I can't emphasize enough how horribly disappointing this way. And such an easy fix. Royal Caribbean needs to really think about how they're treating all of their guests to the same musical experience all day long for a week! Started feeling a bit torturous! Every 4 hours or so we'd recognize a song and just perk up! As I mentioned earlier, people from all over the world and all over the country. Let's lean into that variety musically. On themed buffet dinner nights they'd play 3 or 4 themed songs (Italian, Greek, etc...) and then switch back to that horrible genre of unknown blah. Each one sounding exactly like the one they just played prior. For hours and hours and hours! Basically, it was a great cruise otherwise. Next time we'll bring our own chocolate and music with ear buds!
The ship was in fairly decent shape and kept clean. The staff bent over backwards to make sure everything was to our liking. We felt totally spoiled. The cabin was impressive as there was more cabinet and shelf space than any other cruise ship I've been on and that's saying a lot! Food was always good and wait staff was amazing. Entertainment left a little to be desired and we were a little disappointed. The only major drawback was the itinerary ended up being changed. We were not able to get in to Cabo and had to have spend 2 days in Ensenada. This was not the ships' fault as there was a tropical storm that changed our plans. This could not be helped by any means. There were many youth on board which was a little surprising since school is in session but they were no trouble. Overall, a great cruise.
We sailed on Quantum of the Seas twice this year. We are very loyal to Royal and have sailed with them 29 times and been on every class of ship except Icon. This was our first time on Quantum and given our experience on the other classes was a first a bit taken back by this different layout. On the second cruise we had gotten used to it and so it was not a big shock but still think it is the least favorite layout of any of the classes we have sailed. The second time was a little better since we knew what to expect but we still are not a big fan of the layout from a traffic flow point of view. As with every other cruise, the crew was wonderful and make the cruise. The shipon looked great. With that side here are some of the likes and some not so likes we experienced on these two cruises. The likes were in a couple of the couple of the additions they made in venues. The Music Hall and the Two70 locations were a nice change. The Two70 on the aft of the ship on times when the shades are up and you get a panoramic view of the ocean was spectacular. Likewise, the two-level Music Hall was a great venue for activities and music. We did not use the North Star raising viewing port and saw no real need. The iFly venue was closed and we understood it will be taken out in the next update. I think both of these were attempts to be innovative by Royal but in our opinion they didn’t work. The two best upgrades by far were first the stateroom layouts. We had seen this on Wonder before but the new layouts, thank goodness they lost those little coffee tables, were outstanding and don’t exactly know how they got more space for the showers, but they did. We were in balcony staterooms on both cruises. The second was Solarim, which in our opinion was the best layout of any class of Royal ship. Multi-level with different pools, it never seemed crowded, and the café was excellent. Both changes were amazing. We ate at all the specialty dining rooms on both cruises and had a couple of small issues in two of them that was not up to the standard we had experienced in the past. We also thought that the level of entertainment, with the exception of the Music Hall, was a little below what we had experienced on other classes. So, all in all these were great times as always. Unlike the Oasis class which we will sail just because of the ship regardless of the itinerary we would sail the class again if an itinerary was something we wanted to do but would not sail this class just because of the ship. Hav Our experiences with Royal have always been great and we are looking forward to our 30th cruise with them next April.
This cruise exceeded our expectations! Embarkation was quick and hassle free… we were on board in less than 30 minutes from when we arrived. Our stateroom was located on deck 13 forward and was ready by 1pm. The location was perfect! I had requested an extra mattress topper, so the bed was extremely comfortable. If you are going on an Alaskan cruise, be sure to request an extra blanket as well. It was perfect for wrapping up when sitting on the balcony. We ate at the Solarium Bistro every morning, and a couple of times for lunch and dinner. Very convenient, great food, and friendly crew! Also had an amazing dinner at Wonderland and a special lunch called A Taste of Royal. If you get the chance to have this special lunch, do it!! On Sea Days, we relaxed on our balcony, explored the ship, did some activities, rode the bumper cars and did the North Star. Sooo many things to do! We also enjoyed the shows in the Royal Theatre and the Two70. Our excursions were incredible. In Ketchikan, we did the Bering Sea Crab Boat Tour. What an amazing crew. Their stories were hilarious and also touching. In Juneau, we did the Lake Mendenhall Canoe excursion. Wow!!! The views of the glacier from the canoe were incredible, and our guide, Gabe, was knowledgeable and personable. We didn’t have a lot of time in Victoria, so we decided to do a whale watching excursion… I have no idea how many whales we saw… completely lost count. There were naturalists on board explaining the different behaviors we were seeing… and one of them even took pictures so we could all just enjoy the experience. Tips… this is NOT a relaxing Caribbean cruise… this is a “go out and experience the beauty of Alaska” cruise. If you go in September, plan for rain and colder temps. If you plan appropriately, you’ll have a blast!
Nice ship and not too crowded on this trip. We missed the Sitka stop due to bad weather. I am used to smaller ship's in Royals line and have not found this cruise as fun as the others. Maybe because there is never any activity up on deck due to the cold weather and so activities are scattered in multiple locations. There is also not the same flow on this ship. Many times when you are walking you have to stop and go back instead of being fully able to walk from one end to the other. The nightly parties are tucked away in small venues and can be easily missed. Only 3 self serve soda machines and two are in the Windjammer, so not available when it is closed. There is no movie theater or skating rink on this ship. The Two70 lounge would be the perfect venue for some popular functions like trivia instead of the small Schooner bar. Using the Royal theater for nature movies would be a better choice than the Two70 but Bingo wins out. The bottom line is that I like my cruises warm and sunny and this was not that, so forced to do more indoor activities.
