Expectations: Our expectations for this trip were high. We had been on NCL, Oceana (7 or 8 times, the Marina and Riviana), and loved the food and crews. The overall experience was always quite good, though we had to purchase “packages” for premium booze and amenities. It always was worth it. The only problem we ever had was having to present a cruise card to get a drink of the level of our package or hit the spa etc. That did not happen on RSSC. The atmosphere was a lot more relaxed as a result and we loved it. Pros: The ship itself was wonderful and the perfect size. The spaces and our suite were designed to not feel at all overcrowded. The crew to passenger ratio was great. Not having to present a card for anything was great. The crew was so much more relaxed. In fact, this crew was the best we have ever had. They were all amazing. The dry aged steaks and the sides were truly wonderful, though they never changed. The primum wines served at meals. Good selection. Itinerary and tours: Wonderful. We signed up for this itinerary and they delivered, with the exception of Boston. We are not sure why but we arrived late and barely had the time to fit in our tour of Fenway Park. All the other tours and destination services got done efficiently with nearly invisible logistics. Great job. Cons: The food was, overall, below our expectations and at times disappointing. The kitchen did the same stuff every day. There was no creativity going on there. Also, the food was not always true to the menu description. More about that below. The “Veranda”: The breakfast buffet never changed. Ever. We are old and tend to get up a little later. So we usually have breakfast after 10 am. That meant the other breakfast venues were unavailable to us. So it was go to the Veranda or wait another hour for lunch to open up. From one day through the next 14 days, very little changed. Scrambled eggs, a special (that was often poor and overdone. The “salmon frittata” was a disaster), bangers etc… Really? . The food in the specialty restaurants was the same at the base level across all of the specialties. Oceana has separate kitchens for each specialty offering and it makes a big difference. We can tell. Pacific Rim was good for the entrees, but all of the sides were the same as the other specialty venues. For example, The “seafood stock” used in the “lobster bisque” and the and the “cioppino” and other sea food was not fresh nor real. The sea food was generally good (though previously frozen). The steaks were generally quite good as was the lamb. False menus for the offering: I ordered King scallops. I got small to medium bay scallops that were overcooked. King Scallops are not (overdone) sauteed bay scallops. Coquilles Saint-Jacques are not either. An offering of Foe Gras on a Fillet is not a (tiny less than 1” square) piece of over-done liver that did not even equal a single bite. Overall, the food on the ship was passable, but not of the highest quality indicative of the offering or the menus on the ship, (three stars at best). Beyond Pros and Cons, the “Experiences”: The crew: What a wonderful crew! We have sailed with many different lines and these were the best of the best. The lack of having to scan your card for everything cannot be overstated. It was a really big addition to how relaxed and smoothly the trip and Atlantic crossing went. Without the additional hassle of a complex system to deal with, they paid additional attention to the passengers. The bar tenders (all of them) the coffee bar crew, and all of the wait staff were exceptional. The shore side: All great, even the one tender day. The sea (ship) side: Housekeeping: Great! Even the engineering folks when the plumbing backed up and flooded the bathroom with sewage. We called it in and when they didn’t show we found the steward and showed him. They were there in minutes. Laundry: Both the laundry services and “do it yourself” laundry were great to have. This is a big difference between RSSC and the others. We knew it coming on the ship and only packed 7 days of stuff for a three-week trip. It made all the difference in the world. Thank you!
Things changed in less than 6 months. Fewer included things in cabins, so take inventory and ask if you need something. An addition in cabin is wall dispensers for body soap, conditioner, shampoo, & lotion - not a fan. Suites in general roomy with lots of storage. Double sink bath with both shower and tub. Tub has retractable line for drying items. Shower has rain shower overhead plus adjustable handheld nozzle. Occasional slips re food/service. Several folks commented on smaller portions, not always a bad thing. Larger number of and aggressive marketing for extras to pay for, like spa services, wine lunches & liquor/wine tastings. Few excursions suitable for mobility-challenged. In general, great service, especially from Destinations and Reception staff. Specialty reservations staff person very good as well. Soon to be dry docked in prep for World Cruise. Included laundry is much appreciated, but not like home. It’s harder on clothes, does not get as clean, and they’ll iron items flat rather than creasing slacks in the center of pant legs. You can try with special instructions, but may or may not happen. This was a Transatlantic, which affects demographics. No children in evidence. Lots of older folks, some with mobility issues. Bars were especially full, even pool bar, seats could be hard to find unless you went early.
