Ship Reviews

Vancouver to Alaska Land Cruise and train! Day one of our trip boarded in Vancouver and went to and through the customs and immigrations at the port in Canada at Canada Place in Vancouver. Going through the area where you check in and drop off your luggage we ended up taking an Uber which was easier than taking the bus it seemed. We dropped off our luggage with the bellman who then brought it on the ship where we found it in front of our room later on that afternoon. Aboard the ship we found not many friendly faces working the bars until we got to 1 where the bartender was friendly near the central pool. We had pizza for snack which was very tasty, then went on to follow some of the rules and regulations by listening to the video of safety and going to our room and dropping off our backpacks our rooms are small but nice shower is very small water fills up in the shower area but it is really not a problem. Our Butler or person to take care of our room was Hendry He was very nice and took very good care of us on day one making sure that we had everything we needed in our room. Went off until dinner but before that we watched the hockey game in the cigar bar where we found that was the only TV's to watch the game. There was a raffle at the spay and John described the prize and we ended up winning one. But it was really only a discount off their service. Dinner was delicious I had Cod, my wife had the seafood Stew. My friends had the pork chops and the short ribs it was very tasty and each item and an appetizer and some additional items to enjoy service was magnificent. Wish the bread was warm but ate it because we were hungry. Afterwards we enjoyed the show with some folk music. Day 2 Day 2 happened to be Father’s Day and we enjoyed sitting on the balcony of our room watching the country sail by us went down to breakfast and we were to late for the sit down breakfast so we went to the coffee shop. Then went to the buffet. Service was mediocre. Spent the day going from lecture to lecture where the staff tries to sell you something. Followed by a fathers day message. I used the discount from day one to get $100 off the price of the $199 message. Plus 18% added for service fee. After the message I stopped off at the indoor Jacuzzi grabbed a drink and relaxes after a 75 min massage. The massage was just ok. .u wife had a better massage and enjoyed it more. So I get in the hot tub in the atrium. There seemed to be mold around the outside of the tub. It was not the best experience. Many of the jets did not work. The day went buy and wr found ourselves in the International Dinning room for dinner. Service was just ok needed to step it up with us. After we listened to some music and went to the wonderful event from Bravo. Great voices! Followed by an after dinner drink and some music in the center of the ship. Day 3 Ketchikan we get to Ketchikan at 6 AM. The staff gets on the announcements and wakes us all up not once but twice! Wr got off and walked around like the tourists we are. Enjoyed walking in and out of the shops with a stop at Annabelle’s for a crab lunch. I had the clam chowder and wife had the Dungeness crabs. Back on the ship and listened to a lecture on Picasso, where they try to sell to you one of the Unsigned numbered copies. They are signed by the granddaughter but not Pablo Picasso. After we went down for afternoon tea! Scones, finger sandwiches and cakes. With black tea cookies, jam and cream. Enjoying the scenery outside the window. Dinner was just ok, we had panko fried cod, nothing to write about. Dessert was mediocre. We went to see the game show that ran a little long but fun. Day 4 We get to Juneau AK 8 AM At dock. We scheduled a 11 AM whale watching tour with Viator. But first a nice light breakfast at the International café on board the ship. Great whale watching tour with lots of whales (10) some sealions, and dolphins. Back on the ship to a game 6 watch party to watch the Panthers/Oilers game Dinner is planned for 7:40 and seems like Italian night. We went to the Vivaldi dining room where Malik and Javier took care of us. So far it was the best meal and best service we have had on the ship. I had the chicken parmesan and the special penne ala abriatta That the manager Allwin who was excellent! Day 5 Skagway The days are flying by! Today we stopped this morning in Skagway. We got off the ship around 10 AM after a light breakfast at the café on 5. Tea and a egg and sausage mini burrito. Then off to meet our friends to disembark to walk around the only area around Skagway is a small one main street town with lots of shops and restaurants with no shortage of jewelry stores. We walked over to some of the little museums and then went for a quick lunch at one of the coffee shops. Unfortunately the power went out on the entire island! But not a problem we found the wiener wagon where we were able to get hot dogs that hit the spot. Then walked over to the scooter tour bus and went and took a scooter tour through some interesting parts of the island. We saw all the area in the off road spots that others could not go to. Then over to the Gold rush cemetery and the Waterfall. Fun time with our guides. Then back to the ship as the weather suddenly changed from sunny and clear to blistery winds and then rain. Watched a little sports in the Churchill’s bar and then dinner with the wives at the Vivaldi restaurant on the ship where our amazing and best servers are. Malik and Javier. The manager stopped by and we had a fun conversation about the way he pairs up the staff. After dinner we went to listen to the show in the theater followed by listening to Euphoria duo in the wheelhouse lounge. Great voices! Finally called it a night after 11! Day 6 We make our way to the Glacier Bay national park! Where a ranger boards the ship and tells us about what we see. We paid the extra $60 per person for us to get seats in the solarium area at the front of the ship to cruise through the glaciers. Breakfast sandwiches and continental breakfast was served. We sat and watched the glaciers go by thru the tempered glass while we listened to the park ranger tell us a little about the glacier park. Ship servers came around for a while and brought us drinks until we stepped a away to go for lunch as it was getting cold. We came back up after sushi and pizza lunch in the special upgraded options for plus cruisers. Back to see some eagles and otters on the side if the boat. At 3 the crew came by with afternoon tea which was well received as the temperature dropped to bone freezing air. The tea and scones were best. After that I packed up our stuff and moved over to the Churchill lounge to watch game 6 of the basketball playoffs. While in the bar we asked for some peanuts however, they do not serve them in this bar. So we sat and watched the game, snack free. Tonight will be our second formal night so we will go to the Vivaldi restaurant with our favorite crew members will bring us dinner before we go to the evening entertainment. Tonight is Land and Sea, Lobster and Beef tenderloin l, mushroom soup, and biryani plus a Tuna meal. Again we had our favorite staff members Javier, Malek. Allwin stayed on top of the table and made sure we had drinks at all times. After we went to a game show Marriage mystery show which was very good. Lot’s of fun and followed by the comedy show. We stayed up till about midnight enjoyed the music and went out for pictures with a view of the ocean. Day 7 day at sea and we end the day at College Fjord, So much beauty that we had spent hours outside in the cold taking pictures. Lunch in the international café today with some yummy food and then back to bachata class and then several game shows. After back up on deck for hours to see the Glaciers in College Fjord. Dinner was originally planned in the Savoy dining room but Allwin made sure we had our favorite table with our favorite restaurant team Javier and Malek! They as every night were amazing !! we had several of the dinner options to share Sweet and sour shrimp, Crispy pork belly, And we also had the Ravioli! Two of us went with the salmon. Everything was delicious! And as every night the best service on the ship! After we went to see the last show which was very entertaining and wonderful dancers. We then walked outside where it was full sunlight ay 10:19 PM Just big gorgeous scenery of the Alaska snowcap mountains. Stopped in to the Wheelhouse for a little music with our favorite duo on the ship Euphoria. The beat voices in our opinion. Off the ship and on to Alaska land tour. Disembarking the ship onto our Train to Denali was easy as we were set up in color and numbers. Got off the ship in Whittier, and boarded the train. It was a 2nd level full glass train so we could see all the natural beauty. It was a long 10 hour train ride to Denali National park, with a stop in Anchorage to pick up supplies. We spotted white geese, white mountain goats (Doll Sheep), bears, hikers. the train started offering lunch at around 11 AM we went down around noon and go our surprise the food was good! Tasty Alaskano sandwich which was there take on a Cuban sandwich, and a seafood sandwich. They came with a side of pickles coleslaw and chips or potato wedges. Our server was Lan and it was her first week and she was wonderful. If she didn’t tell is how new she was I would have thought she was doing this all her life. After lunch we continued to enjoy the scenery from our seats. Not much to see in wilderness but beautiful scenery. Jazmyn S. was terrific to listen to about our journey she gave us info throughout the journey and Josip S. our bartender kept us hydrated the entire trip. For dinner we went to prospector’s historic bar and ale house. Where we enjoyed salad which we shared between four of us a large pizza with an appetizer which was more than enough for dinner at 10:30 at night. Dinner was very good for where we were and what we had. Cayman was our waiter And the front staff was very gracious in getting us a table quickly. it was still a full sunny evening so we went back to hotel after dinner and sat by the fireplace. New day in Denali we went to the coffee shop at the hotel which was at the hotel Denali. We stayed in section D in the Wolf Den at the Denali Lodge. This lodge is is part of Princess cruises. The Lodge is nice and everyone is niece. Annie at the front desk was very helpful. We made some excursion changes which she was helpful in making those changes with Vickie as well. The rooms the Denali lodge are very comfortable although no shelves to put anything on so you have to keep your suitcases open and use that the bed is comfortable it has TV clean room fairly new looking you had a slight problem with water on the floor on the carpeting but they came and took care of it right away I would give this a three star 3 ½ star for a motel/hotel type environment. The staff was extremely friendly and easy to speak with and talk to throughout the day. We went started our day as I mentioned in the coffee shop. After several hours of wondering around the shops both in the open area of the lodge and across the street we ended up for lunch at the Black Bear farm to Table food where I had the chicken bowl and my wife had the quinoa bowl both with chicken. Then we spent the rest of the day going white water rafting Newwave adventures The rafting was lots of fun and our guide Jay money was really great at keeping us afloat. The river was at a very high level today due to the warm weather and heavy rains and so the water was moving pretty fast I chose not to row as everyone else I took some photos which I enjoyed doing on the route we saw a moose which was fun to see standing on the side of the shore the water was ice cold in the low 30s. We were on the rafts for over an hour and a half and they were so much fun and everyone when we got off just had a blast and enjoyed themselves J money was our leader and crew chief and did a fantastic job. Corbin Shared the information we needed before we boarded the raft. And ALY helped us get on our wet suits. That was fun for a big guy like me. After we got off we stopped off and had some ice cream before we got back to the hotel to change for dinner. Dinner was at Fannie Q’s at the resort. The meal was Mediocre at best. I ordered the fish and chips and they were just the hush puppies were just good unless there was something on it and they only had ketchup or lemon aioli to add to any flavor. We sat outside for several hours by the fireplace which was not on due to smoke from the fires in Alaska. We sat outside for several hours around a fireless fire pit and just enjoyed the evening until around 11:30 PM. Today is our last full day in Denali and we woke up and had some coffee and tea and took a bus to the visitor center to see the sleigh dogs and enjoy a show from the sleigh dogs and see how they pull a sleigh and go walk around and see the puppies and dogs it was very nice we also got to see a movie on Alaska while we were there. After we left that we went back to the hotel had lunch at grizzly which was very very good Benjamin was the waiter and he was an exceptional one. We shared a salmon blackened sandwich and a Calif chicken sandwich. Both were tasty with the appetizer of their cheese curds which were delicious with their very very homemade jalapeno relish wow was that good. I wish I had that the night before to add to my meal but today it was delicious and we enjoyed it and Benjamin was a great waiter my wife I also went with this blueberry cream soda which was delicious as well and I’m planning on getting more of it. We started our afternoon adventure by getting on the bus and going on a four-hour tour through the history and nature tour through the Denali National Park. Our guide was Missy and she was very very good and very informative and showed us tons of wildlife outdoors and all of the areas that we drove by she gave us stories about the area and the people of the park. We stopped off at the old bus depot and watch the movie about Alaska and the indigenous people then we went on to a cabin where they use in the summer and winter with the sleigh dogs and then off to the end of the roads where you can just barely see the mount McKinley. The clouds were covering we could not see it we tried really hard got a many photos of the area we returned back to the hotel and stopped off and went shopping for a little while tonight's At king salmon. And we’ll see how things go there tonight. We packed up and got on the bus from the princess lodge to Anchorage scheduled by Princess Cruises, were we will be staying at the Captain Cook Hotel. Dwight was our bus driver, he was one of the best content and smooth drive we have had an easy ride. Lots of details and several stops by Dwight our driver. He gave us so much information that had been so helpful. We even got a stop on the south side of Denali /Mt McKinley and were able to get dome great shots of the mountain. Got us to the Captain cook hotel safely in about 5 hours. Anna at the Chubby coffee shop was great and she was so kind and helpful getting some afternoon tea and coffees. We then grabbed a 1 hour trolley ride to get acquainted with the city. Dinner was at a sushi place on 4th. Next day was a full day Anchorage tour which included some of the same spots from the Trolley ride and I forgot to mention our friends departed and went home. WE went with the Tour, but it seemed more of a sales event as they took us to the Ullu Factory to buy cutlery and then to the Smoked fish and meat shop to buy that stuff. Most of it was already to familiar to us as we did the trolley tour. We left the Princess program and went out on our own for the remainder of the week to visit our people and go on tours of the museums and the area. We asked the Princess folks if we still would get a ride to the Airport or to our new hotel and they said that they do not offer that option. So, we took Ubers everywhere else. If I was to give this trip a 5 it would be a lie, it was a sold 4 maybe even 3.75 but the people and the service in most places was amazing and the time we spent seeing the Alaska landscape was priceless!
