Ship Reviews

This was our second cruise on this ship the first one was back in 2018 to the Baltics. We were with Canadian friends who we last traveled with in 2023 on the Diamond Princess in Japan. We had a good time with our friends our waiters in the Allegro dining room Archie and Pravin were great they went above and beyond for us.Our cabin steward did a good job always asking about our needs and how we were doing. The entertainment on the ship was very good and the food was good and plentiful.Embarkation and Disembarkation were smooth the safety drill did not take long.Unfortunately the cabins are small and need updating the bathrooms are tiny and have the dreaded shower curtain they do not have much room to move around. The room also needs updated charging ports with my husbands c pap machine always fighting for charging ports. The balcony was good but like I said the room needs updating.I think they had the ship in dry dock and might have replaced some carpeting and furniture but it needs more than that. Also they were pushing packages we were approached three times when we got onboard that is unacceptable. We have been on many cruises and are Platinum on Princess we deserve better. Also did not appreciate the extra charges for room service we had very early tours booked and had to do this for breakfast several days plus the menu is limited and one day they ran out of bananas.Never had to pay for room service before now extra 5 percent charge. The new management is messing things up on the ships do not like their cost cutting moves. We also missed Liverpool due to weather we could not dock.

Overall, the cruise was enjoyable. There are 3 ports where you tender to the port - Dublin, Lerwick, and Edinburgh. The waves were too rough at Edinburgh, so we spend that day at sea. Bummer. One has to ask why Edinburgh (capital of Scotland) does not have a port for the cruise ships. The other ports were very nice. My group of 6 did several small private tours with local guides, and a few tours with Princess. Most ports are cities with narrow streets, so the large tour buses cannot go on the streets. these small streets is where you really get the best experience and pictures. As for the Regal Princess, it is similar in design, food quality, service, and shows that you get with other Princess ships. The entertainment included several performers from Ireland and Scotland (river dancing, irish music, bagpipes). The best way to describe this itinerary is "a traveling hotel." Note: do not do the Paris excursion . . . it is a whirlwind trip, with little time to get off the bus except for lunch on the river boat.

My first cruise since Covid and a lot has changed. The ships are bigger (which is not a plus for me as I prefer smaller ships). The Medallion system is new to me and makes life easier than carrying a key card. But much of what I love about Princess is the same. The crew is fantastic - warm and welcoming and friendly. Our stateroom was comfortable and we had a fantastic room steward who went above and beyond for our comfort. The food was excellent - no skimping in either quality or quantity. And there was terrific variety - something for every taste. This was planned as a holiday for my daughter and myself to give us time together as well as time for us both to just relax and unwind. We went to some of the shows which we enjoyed but did not feel it necessary to get involved in all the activities. On past cruises I was constantly playing trivia or card games or going to lectures or watching a movie or two and going dancing every evening with my late husband. This was totally different - more relaxing. My daughter and I would get up and go to the hot tubs for a bit and then swim for about an hour - hot tub again for a few minutes and then start our day and we basically had the pool to ourselves at that time of day. We used the Spa services for massages a couple of times. We knew there was a lot available to keep us occupied - if we wished, but this cruise was meant to be relaxing for us. Despite the volume of people on this cruise - the ship rarely felt overcrowded or with big lineups - with a few exceptions which I will mention later on. Embarkation was relatively quick. Because a postal strike had been threatened in Canada - we did not have our medallions mailed to us but got in a quickly moving line to pick them up when boarding the ship. We used them as room keys- they unlocked our stateroom doors as we approached them - we used them to pay for any purchases on ship - and could use them to 'find our travelling companion' which was really handy - especially in the Lido deck at mealtimes. I chose this cruise for the ports of call - places I have been to in the UK in the past and wanted my daughter to experience. I had originally planned to have a land holiday for a couple of weeks in Edinburgh but thought this would give my daughter more variety. We did not book any tours - either ship ones or land tours - but chose to do our own exploring and make use of hoho buses in the larger cities. Cobh is a delightful little town and was fun to explore. I quickly found that walking up the huge hill to the cathedral had been a lot easier the first time in my 60s than it was now in my 80s. However we had a great time- with great views from the heights and then fun meandering our way over to a local museum that was part way down the hill and exploring it before returning to ground level and the museum there dockside about all the people that left the area for North America, South America and Australia - sometimes willingly and sometimes out of desperation and sometimes unwillingly. Belfast - I stayed on the ship when we docked at Belfast but my daughter went ashore and had a great time. I was trying to get caught up on my travel letters that day. Kirkwall turned out to be my favourite port of call. It was new to me - first time I had been in Orkney and we were just blown away by the friendlimess of the people and the sights of the town. The cathedral was magnificent, the shops were charming and the local crafts were irresistable. The Viking museum was a 'must see' , as well as the lovely garden behind it. There was a local craft fair on elsewhere in town and I could not resist purchasing several unique items. The wool that is produced and knitted there is unlike any I have ever seen - so soft it is like silk. I would love to go back there again someday! Glasgow was thoroughly enjoyed. We docked at Greenock and had a choice of bus or train to get us into Glasgow and opted for the bus to see some of the countryside along the way. We arrive and within 10 minutes a HoHo bus arrived and we had a great tour of Glasgow and an excellent commentary. We thoroughly enjoyed all the sights and took a ton of photos. Eventually we went back to the Buchanan bus station to await the bus that took us back to Greenock and our ship. Invergordon - we read in CC about the total chaos the previous cruise to ours had at that port and decided that we had no wish to experience that and would have a 'sea day' ourselves. It was lovely and lazy. Edinburgh - at 7 we were told by the captain that because of high winds we would not be going to Queensferry as it would be rough seas for passengers and crew going ashore by boat - so we missed the port I as most looking forward to seeing again. However - safety is the most important thing so no complaints about missing the port. And I expect I would not have been happy had we gone through the same delays as in Dublin. Dublin - When a ship cannot dock actually in a city it goes to a smaller port - in this case Dun Laoghaire - which meant the passergers were transported to that dock in the lifeboats ( which each hold a lot of people). However - with a big ship and the people signed up for ship tours getting transported first and then the rest after - it meant an hour or more waiting in one of the lounges before even getting in the boat and though there were about 4 (possibly more as difficult to count them) that were doing the transporting - by the time our feet were on soil it was noon and we still had to take a train to Dublin. We did a Hoho bus there and got off at one point to explore a good shopping street and pick up a couple of souvenirs before completing the rest of the route. It had been such chaos getting on shore that my daughter urged me to head back at 3 so that we were sure to get a boat back and on ship by 5. We wound up only having 3 hours in Dublin and not getting to explore at all- simply view from the bus. There are too many people on these big ships to make these kind of stops work successfully unless they book ship tours and I heartedly resent being forced to purchase something I do not want in order to get off the ship promptly. Or else they need to use far more of their boats to ferry more passengers to shore more quickly. This was a big negative as far as I am concerned. Le Havre - a lovely little port of call to explore with lots to see and lovely shops and well worth a visit - not just as a stepping stone to other destinations. We walked around for hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a shuttle service from the ship to the center of town and back to the ship. There was one other issue I had with the changes that Princess had made. I have cruised a good amount with Princess as well as with Norwegian and Holland America and even a couple with MSC. In the past I have always purchased internet services on board, any shopping was added to our bill as well as any liquor purchased and of course our gratuities. I was told this time that could not be done and in order to have internet I had to order a package. This package included internet, liquor (up to 15 drinks a day- which amount I would never drink), 2 specialty desserts (which I also would not touch as they looked like about 1000 calories each), 2 fitness sessions (which I would also never use - are they meant to offset the specialty dessert calories?) gratuities - which I always pay anyway and I believe some coffees (which I do not drink). At about $60 US a day for 12 days that is $720 US for the cruise which converts to about $1000 CAN. Then to add to the search for extra profits - if one person in the stateroom has this package then all members in the stateroom muct have it. My daughter purchased this for me as a surprise as she knew I wanted internet to stay in touch at home. I was really annoyed by this - not by her doing it for me - but the fact that she had to get two of these packages that are full of things I did not need nor want and did not use. And I have reimbursed her for that as did not feel it was fair at all for her to have to pay that much just to get internet for me. Once we were on ship there was a notice in our stateroom that I could purchase that package at half price because of my cruises in the past with Princess - but it was too late then and at no time I was told this in advance when talking with Princess - where I did the booking. Despite a few disappoints during the cruise - we thoroughly enjoyed it and I would happily do it again - in the hopes of manging to visit all the ports of call - plus the fact that the crew was so terrific to us. Disembarkation was a snap as we decided we had no trouble walking off with our cases. The time we would have been given had we put our cases out was 10:30. By walking out ourselves with our cases we cleared customs, got a taxi to the train station, and got on a train for Portsmouth and were in our hotel room there by shortly after 9:00 a.m. Fast and easy!

Sailed on the round the UK and Ireland and France cruise from 14th June 2025. Embarkation: was fast and easy, we arrived at Southampton at about 12 noon and we were on the ship by about 12:30pm, so no issues there at all. Medallion / App: Generally we liked the medallion, it seemed to work ok, although the phone app is a bit clunky. Activities: Throughout the cruise there was always lots going in and often activities were repeated at different days / times, so if you missed one, there was usually an opportunity to do it at a later date. Service: Generally service was good, we did not have to wait much to get food in the buffet or the main dining rooms although sometimes trying to order a drink directly from a member of staff was hard as they were not always there. I think staff concentrated on orders via the app, so we usually just went to the bar and ordered direct. We also tried to avoid really busy times in the main buffet, often going about 7:30pm when it was much quieter. Cabin: We had a Balcony deluxe and it was nice. The balcony was one deck above the lifeboats and there were lifeboats to the right hand side, (but below the view) so it was basically not really a restricted view at all). The ship (Regal) is now approx 10-12years old, and the furniture in the cabin was starting to look a bit old, with some worn & scratched edges, and likewise the balcony rail was looking a bit old and tired, and the curtains and carpets were slightly old fashioned, but despite that the room and balcony were very nice. The fridge worked fine, bathroom was nice, safe was ok, lots of storage, eg: large hanging spaces with lots of hangers, and lots of drawers and cubby holes to store stuff. We had quite a lot, eg: Two suitcases, one large holdall and two rucksacks, plus one small bag, but we never felt like we were pushed for space. Everything worked as it should, so overall good. Dining: We used all the dining options and in general the food was very nice, lots of choice, hot, plenty of flavour and plenty of it. Buffet: We used this most of all and it was always nice food with lots of options. Symphony: This is the pre booked dining option and we only used it once, mainly cos its options were less than the buffet, so less choice, but the food and service was good. Allegro: We used this once on the first day (to avoid the very busy buffet) for lunch and it was nice enough, but had limited choice. Crown Grill: We used this once as one of the speciality restaurants and it was very, very nice, well worth it, great food and good service. Sabatinis: We were disappointed here, not many food choices, poor service at the start (as they were so busy) and very small food portions, but the food was very nice. Would not use this option again! Trident grill: Poolside burger / hotdog bar, this was great, food was always freshly cooked, nice burgers and hotdogs with many options and great fries! Pool deck pizza bar: Slightly disappointed with this option, pizza was very greasy and what is it with American cheese/pizza, it just tastes a bit plasticky! Afternoon tea: Had to mention this as it was very poor. Only available for short time (45 mins), very limited choice of food, sandwiches, tea, cakes, etc and the portions were tiny, eg: the scone was literally one small mouthful! I know this is probably only intended as a "taster" of a British afternoon tea, but it was frankly embarrassing! We sat at a table with four Americans and we felt we had to apologise as this was not a good representation of what a real and proper British afternoon tea is really like at all! Poor, so Princess must try harder here.... Entertainment: Generally good, lots of talks, shows, movies, games, etc, etc. Plenty of sports stuff, gold, racketball, basketball, football, etc. The onboard TV was not that great with only a few live channels, mostly news, but most cruise ship tv is pretty poor IMHO. They did have a good selection of films, although by the end of the cruise we were starting to run out of things to watch, so they could maybe add a few more? Gym: The onboard gym was very good, I used it a couple of times and it was never full, the machines were great, lots of them and a good choice, eg: rowing machines, treadmills, weight benches, cycling, etc. The walking/running track was also good, used this every day at the top of the ship. Ports of call: Due to bad weather we had to skip the Edinburgh (South Queensferry) port stop, but not really the fault of Princess. But disappointed anyway as we were looking forward to this stop, so we got an extra day at sea instead. Cobh (Cove) was a nice little town, well worth a look. Dublin was a fair way from the port stop, but the town of dun laoghaire (sp) was nice enough. We've been to Dublin before so did not bother going into there. Belfast is always worth a look, we've been before so this time we did an excursion to the Giants Causeway, we used an external company (Shore Excursions) which was half the price of the Princess excursions. Glasgow (Greenock) was a bit of a disappointment, its a long way from Glasgow and we chose to stay on the ship, but there are excursions into Glasgow and surrounding area. TBH Glasgow is just a normal city not really the best tourist destination, so if doing an excursion I would do one to the surrounding area, Loch Lomond, etc. Orkney Isles (Kirkwall) was great, a lovely little place to explore and the Orkneys are also great for exploring with lots of history, neolithic sites, etc. We did a two hour coach tour and it was great, (via Princess excursions). Le Havre: we chose to stay on the ship as we've been there before and the ship was docked far away from the town, so not an easy walk! Disembarkation: Also fast and easy with no issues. Is the cruise family friendly?: yes, they do have dedicated kids areas and lots for kids to do. Thankfully on our cruise there were not many kids, so a blessing for us, less noise, etc. Cruise Issues: We had a few minor ones... I find it very disappointing to have to pay extra for things like lobster, when you have already paid extra at the speciality restaurants! This should be included. If people are being greedy and trying to order more than one, then charge them for the extra ones, don't penalise everyone due to a few greedy passengers! Safe: I thought I had an issue with the safe, but our cabin steward sorted it out, so not an issue in the end. Bathrobes: We had none on arrival, but our cabin steward got us some. Pillow: My wife needed a softer pillow and our cabin steward got her one. Bathroom basin/sink: on one day the little plug got stuck, so could not empty the sink, we reported to our steward and by the time we returned to our cabin, later the same day it was already sorted, great stuff. Tea choices: Only one choice of a "normal" British tea, eg: Twinings breakfast, and it was those horrid, small tea bags with string. If you stirred the teat or squeezed the tea bag too much, the bag would split thus ending up with horrid tea leaves in your tea. They did also have Earl Grey, Darjeeling, etc, but most normal peeps do not drink that swill, most of us want a normal proper builders brew!!! Please please please princess, just get some normal, proper British teabags, eg: Yorkshire, Tetley, Typhoo, PG Tips, etc, not those horrid little ones with string! The British take their tea very seriously and its disappointing to not be able to have a decent cuppa on a cruise, it really is! After 12 days on this ship I was gagging for a nice strong brew, I really was.... Afternoon tea: See above, it was very poor IMHO. Onboard Library: it was half empty! Not many books and a pretty poor selection, but lots og board games, so.... Upselling stuff and general on board cost: There was the usual cruise upselling throughout the cruise, eg: photos, selling stuff, clothes, jewellery, watches, booze, etc. although to be fair it was not pushed in your face too much. There were not many freebies? on previous cruises we have attended art auctions, wine tasying, sales events where free wine or other free drinks were offered, but I did not see hardly any of these on this cruise, one art auction in the daily patter did mention champagne, but when we attended there was none! The cost of most things onboard was stupidly high, eg: excursions, drinks, "extra" costs for speciality foods, etc. IMHO I also think the princess plus and princess premium are well over priced for what you get. EG: we don't drink much and don't indulge in lots of desserts, speciality coffees, and did not use their wifi as it was a UK based cruise and we had our own wifi via our phones for most of the time, so for us it just did not add up. But, if you do use all the above then it might be worthwhile for you, but do the sums and work it out. We spent about £200 onboard, just a few drink and couple of other bits, so we did not spend much extra. Crew appreciation: it really grates with me that you pay a price for a cruise, a supposedly all inclusive cruise at that, but in reality there is always, always lots of added extras, including the dreaded crew appreciation, or gratuities or service charges or just plain old tips! I really don't mind paying it, but tell mw upfront, clearly. Just include it all in the total price at the start so we all know exactly what we are all paying. TBH I'm surprised cruise companies still get away with this, as they way they seem to do it is very sneaky IMHO and it all adds up. Cabin steward, special mention... He was great (Elmar), always cheerful, always had a smile, despite clearly being very busy, always happy to stop and have a chat. And he quickly sorted out our few very minor issues, requests, see above...No complaints at all about our steward, he was fab. All in all a nice relaxing cruise which we did enjoy.

This is our 2nd Princess british isles cruise. to start off, embarkation was a 15 minute breeze. super efficient, our room was ready at 11 and luggage an hour later. we headed to Horizon for a delicious lunch -- my favorites are the carving station. Our room steward was Mike V on Caribe deck. all the way front. w/ balcony. there was a medical evacuation 2 hrs after we left Southampton-- a helicopter landed, Captain announced - no filming, do not go on balconies Starboard side. i hope that person is ok. Prompt & speedy med vac. I noticed a lot of Americans onboard this trip - 7 years ago it was mostly Brits. Over 1000 were first time Princess cruisers. 800 gold status, forgot ruby stats, 475 Platinum and 280 Elite. found this out at the Captains party that the Captain didn't show up for.
