Ship Reviews

The Ventura seemed to be a good all-rounder. Although it is a family-friendly ship, it is not just for families with children (unlike some cruise ships) but also couples, single travellers, older people, first time cruisers, ‘frequent floaters’ etc. It was spotlessly clean. All the staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. There was an extremely varied programme of entertainment ranging from a classical flautist, and Elton John tribute, a beat box trio, a Glen Miller evening, an Eric and Ernie tribute, a soul singer, a comedy magician, a radio show, interesting guest speakers and lots more. It was easy to get a booking in the formal restaurant and the staff really seemed to have a handle on things, with the right balance between serving quickly but not rushing us. We didn’t have to book for the theatre so were able to get in to the 8.30pm slot easily (yes, you do have to book the theatre on some P&O ships – people book but lots don’t turn up). The ship did seem to have a bit of a tilt at times and seemed to rock around somewhat more than most other cruise ships I have been on. It was great having a promenade going around the whole of the ship but unfortunately we were never able to find a time to walk around it fully when there weren’t people working on it so bits were blocked off (but they have to do this sometime, I suppose). Our shower had a fixed head which made it difficult to rinse all the soap off which wasn’t ideal. There were no shuttle buses in Lanzarote (there have been previously) and it was a fair walk to the town. I am fairly fit but lots of people with mobility problems struggled and several gave up and stayed on the ship. The meals, including the buffet, were generally served hot (although not all). There were three table tennis tables in good condition and in a sensible place where you weren’t likely to lose balls, although there were never enough of them but there were plenty of bats. Not all the lifts worked and one wouldn’t stop at one of the decks it was supposed to (the lift button didn’t seem to be working). It is obvious there have been cutbacks with P&O over the years to save money eg there used to be recently released films showing but no longer and a few years ago there was a wider range of bottled and craft ales/beers. Unfortunately we had to miss the last stop due to an impending storm so the captain made the decision to return back to Southampton early but that was better than going through a storm on a tilting boat across the Bay of Biscay. Despite the (minor) niggles, it was still an enjoyable cruise.
