Ship Reviews

This is our first time on Britannia but many times with P&O - Embarkation took over an hour and we got onboard by 15.00 We liked the ship but discovered that there were no stairs to the top decks from Midship so had to traipse either to the aft or forward alongside all the other guests. Our inside cabin was on the 15th deck and we have no complaints. There was a lot of hanging space available for clothes and floor space for our shoes. Our shower was great with shampoo and washing gel available. We had hot water when we needed it. The air conditioner was perfect and we were able to adjust it to our needs. Food was on the simple side which we appreciated and eat most of our meals in the Horizon Buffet. We were booked into the early sitting in the Oriental Restaurant but felt the service took too long and we were unimpressed with the attempt of the fancy names of the food. Entertainment was good but not exceptional. We had to arrive 45 minutes before the show to get a seat in the Theatre. We also found that on many occasions there were no seats available for the entertainment in other venues on the ship. One of the problems we encountered were that apart from the Silent Disco at 21.30 there was no DJ and dancing before 23.15- we love bopping to music - There was plenty of ballroom dancing though. We had booked excursions before our cruise and only after receiving all the tickets did we notice that one of our excursions in Stockholm was missing. When we went to the desk to enquire about this we were told it was cancelled- we were not informed and when we went to book something else most of the excursions were full. WE should have been informed by email before our cruise or letter when on board. It was only by chance that we discovered this cancellation. Definitely poor customer service . The organisation of the excursions were good and we enjoyed this cruise because of the ports we visited. Unfortunately we received very bad service on our disembarkation. Our suitcase was badly damaged when we picked it up in the Terminal. We reported immediately and now over 2 weeks later we have not heard back from the Baggage Handling company in spite of contacting them several times by phone and email. This has lowered our overall experience and cannot foresee us booking another P&O cruise until we can trust the company again.

Overall, some delightful ports and a satisfactory, if not spectacular onboard experience. Embarkation a breeze. We had priority embarkation and were onboard by 11.15. It seems very organised at the Ocean terminal. Our suite (Peninsula Suite) seemed smaller than the suites on other P and O ships. Balcony was very narrow, but being aft, it did wrap around the side, giving extra space. However, the balcony and furniture were quite dirty and chairs chipped and damaged. The suite was kept spotless by our cabin steward. There are a lot of suites on Britannia (68, I think), but only 4 butlers, who were run off their feet. We were lucky to see ours once a day for about 5 minutes! The food was great in the MDR, the buffet and the speciality restaurants. Plenty of choice. This aspect has definitely improved over the last couple of years. Entertainment was very average. Saw a couple of Headliners shows, some of the singing was awful. Guest acts generally didn't appeal to us e.g. juggler and comedian, but singer Racel Hawnt was very good. Best of all was the guest speaker, David Wright who gave brilliant presentation of the history of the region, combined with a guide to each port. He really knew his stuff! Enjoyed all the ports, except Keil, which had little to offer apart from museums, which were closed on the day we were there! All the ports were very busy, often 4 ships in at a time. Now that St Petersburgh is off limits it has put extra pressure on other ports. On this trip, a shuttle bus was required in every port. For passengers on saver fare, a charge of £4 or£5 each way was made, which really added up over the whole cruise.. Hop on hop off buses were available in most places and would pick up by the ship. Britannia is not an easy ship to get around, it doesn't seem to flow easily, perhaps hampered by the lack of a central staircase. I believe she had a refresh a few months ago, but this is not evident everwhere, particularly in the stairways and lifts. Service was variable. In some bars it was quick and efficient, but in the coffee bar the wait was so long, we gave up. Took our own takeaway cups and got served at the counter much quicker. Disembarkation in Southampton excellent. We had priority disembarkation and were off the ship by 7.45. Cases easy to find as they were all grouped together.

We enjoyed our holiday on Britannia. Cabin was fine, plenty of storage but the balcony was small. Dined in the Beach House twice and particularly enjoyed the fajitas and prawns, also lovely views. We also dined in the Epicurean and the food was excellent but the service was slow the second time. We felt the food in the MDR was not as good as previously but the service was excellent. One of our favourite meals was in the Glass House, it was excellent. Entertainment was fine, the solo musicians were particularly good in the bars. Embarkation and disembarkation were excellent and ran very smoothly, no problems at all. The captain updated us daily with all the information you needed. All the ports were interesting in their own way, and Skjolden was particularly stunning, even in the rain. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our seven day cruise and we would certainly consider another cruise to the Norwegian fjords with P&O..
