Ship Reviews

The ship itself deserves a 5, it was the most beautiful ship we've been on. This was our 18th cruise. Beyond that, we'd give everything else between 3-5 depending on the subject. We know it's a new ship and crew. We're sure they'll work out the bugs and continue to improve. Food in every restaurant was hit or miss. We ate everywhere at least twice. Every time one night great, another night not so much. We were very disappointed in the lobster in every restaurant. Steaks were just OK, filets were the best choice. Sea bass and scallops were excellent. Oceania has no on-board app, very disappointing. Our B3 cabin was beautiful, but no coffee maker. One excursion was lousy, but the others were all very good. Captain cancelled Mykonos due to waves, 4 other ships we saw tendered in. This was very disappointing. We'd consider Oceania in the future.

This was our first time in Europe and 25 years since our last cruise on a what I would characterize as an entry-level cruise line so a major step up. We were in a PH2 extended balcony cabin and have already booked another cruise in that very same cabin on deck 7, it was that good. While I would not say every meal was stellar, we had some very good food. Our favorites were Toscana and Polo Grill (the latter surprised us because of the so-so reviews, but our dinner was great!). Jacques, Red Ginger and the GDR were fine, just not stellar. We loved having a choice to go casual at lunch and dinner on a whim, so really loved Waves Grill and the Terrace Cafe. Aquamar was fine. The real standouts for us (beyond the food) were the exceptional service, and the really great Founders and Martinis bars. We loved both! We had four Oceania excursions, liked them just fine, had some good experiences. As basically first-time cruisers, we didn’t feel comfortable going with private tours but might do that next time. Overall, the ship never felt crowded, the food was very good, the suite and service excellent. Our singular complaint was the spa. For the price, we’d have to think long and hard before booking spa services next time. We’ve already booked two more, one on Allura in our same cabin and one on another ship. Highly recommend.

Allura is a beautiful ship with a great crew, delicious food and overall this was an excellent trip. This is our 3rd Oceania cruise ( previously on Marina and Sirena) and this ship is a big improvement. We were in a concierge balcony cabin, nice decor and plenty of storage, very comfortable bed, large bath with a good size shower ( we won't sail again on the renaissance class Oceania ships as the cabin size and shower size were too small) and although the cabin is smaller than some other ships it was comfortable. The food in the specialty restaurants Jaques, Tuscana and Red Ginger was excellent and Polo Grill was the weakest, Waves, Aquamar and Terrace Cafe are all great and the main dining room needs some improvement, (service was slow , food quality was good but not as good as expected and menu was limited). For a ship this size we were surprised that there is only one pool, it is a large pool but it would have been nice if the small spa terrace pool was kept at a pool temperature not as a hot tub and made accessible to everyone, not just concierge level and up. The service was excellent, one of the best crews we have had. The cruise director Paul was great too. The entertainment overall was just OK, quality of the bands etc. was mediocre. I think everyone still had fun but if your favourite thing is the nightly show you may be disappointed. Only real problem was the aft elevator had one side out of service for the entire cruise, and from others on board it seems it was out before we embarked, I like taking the stairs but for anyone unable to it was very inconvenient and wait times could be long.

We just came off our 4th Oceania cruise, this time the 12 night itinerary from Athens to Rome on the Allura, the newest ship in the fleet. The ship itself is beautiful, having made several improvements over the Riviera and Marina we've sailed before while still maintaining the same basic layout, so we felt very comfortable in getting around. We stayed in a PH2 room with one of the smaller balconies, so only two chairs and table. No lounger, but that was okay. It turned out to be a very convenient location, with handy access to the midship elevator. As far as the much talked about soundproofing issues on Vista that may have affected Allura as well, we had no problems or complaints at all. It was perfectly insulated from sounds coming from any direction. While the arrangement of the closets and bathroom have changed from Riviera, they were still very well thought out and functional. Our two cabin attendants were excellent as usual, and our butler was a gem! He must be the best in the fleet. He was the quintessential problem solver, no matter what we needed. We always book based on itinerary. This was a good one. We had been many of these places before, but friends had urged us to travel with them. In that situation we make up for having seen places before by choosing the more off beat excursions that take you out of the main tourist areas. Unfortunately, the first stop out of Athens, Mykonos, had to be cancelled due to high seas and winds that prohibited tender operations. The next was Istanbul where we had visited twice before, so we chose one of the Oceania "go local" options, Old Neighborhoods of Istanbul. That was cancelled at the last minute due to lack of participation. At Canakkale the tour of ancient Troy was fairly good, but the excursion in Kusadasi was one of the duds. Titled Turkish Towns and Villages, the visit to Sirince was a ho-hummer and the stop in Tyre was mildly interesting due to a visit to the museum where villagers were demonstrating local crafts. However, the lunch was in an Irish pub(!) and was mediocre at best. The emphasis in Tyre seemed to be on the felt making demonstration where, of course, products were for sale, followed by the guide's offer to take people to yet another rug shop when we returned to Kusadasi. Without going into detail on all the other tours, I'll just mention Rhodes where this super entertaining guide named Lefty, led our small group of 15 on Traditional Inland Villages where we all got to learn the art of making our own dolmades. One of the best ever on Oceania! The other excellent one was Sidi bou Said and Ancient Carthage where our guide was a Ph.D. historian who gained access for us to the American Cemetery and Memorial, the only one from World War II in North Africa, even though it was Sunday. Very moving as usual. The Hop-On-Hop-Off bus and walking tour in Crete was only so-so. Historic and Cultural Palermo was good, but crowded and hot! Activities were the usual found on Oceania, enrichment talks, trivia, casino, etc., so I won't go into those. I will mention the new Lynk technology center where we could get help if we needed it but could also take classes. I took one on photography when the stop in Mykonos was cancelled. This was a nice addition. Entertainment was good overall. There was the usual array of very good musicians like the Allura show band, the string quartet and Alexandre at the piano in Martinis. We felt the production shows were only so-so and only took in one of those. We don't care for stand-up comedians, so skipped those nights. However, the two special vocalists, Andrew Bateup and Isabel Commandeur were fantastic. Wish we could have heard more from them. Finally, dining. There was some good and some bad. First, we found all the usual choices from the past. I'm glad they retained Jacques rather than replacing it with Ember. The Aquamar Kitchen is a nice addition for somewhat healthier choices. The Bakery that is now part of Baristas had some nice offerings. The Creperie looked good but only offers sweet crepes rather than savory, so we didn't find the right time to try it. The biggest changes in the Grand Dining Room are the decor and the layout. If possible, it's even more attractively done than the older ships. They have also used nice, unobtrusive partitions to section the room off into smaller spaces. Eating in those areas felt much cozier and more intimate. As for the bad, it's hard to put a finger on it but I felt the dining "experience" had gone down a notch. The first couple of nights in Red Ginger, Jacques and the GDR, there was a feeling of being rushed. The waiters were pushing to quickly order, eat and move on. On one occasion we had to tell them three or four times we weren't ready to order. As for food quality, the ribeye I got in Polo Grill, where it should have been the best steak experience on board, was practically inedible due to the fat and gristle. In the Terrace Grill, we had always thought that the food being served by the staff was a nice touch and more sanitary. For the most part, that is no more. It's help yourself, use the tongs, put them back for the next person, just as you might find on Celebrity or Carnival. I may be misremembering, but Baristas used to offer more in the morning than just pastries and a little fruit. I recall things like yogurt, cheeses and salmon. That's all gone. As I look back on the trip now, I really can't truly think of a dining experience that was truly memorable. Touting the "finest cuisine at sea" is a difficult standard to live up to and can easily slip away. In summary, I've given this cruise 4 out of 5 overall. It's a beautiful ship with the usual great crew and service. The itinerary had the potential for being fabulous. Would we do this trip again? Perhaps. But we will certainly sail the Allura in the future.
