Ship Reviews

This is one of the best cruises I’ve ever been on. The Marina is a beautiful ship and with only 1,450 passengers a perfect size. It’s beautifully decorated in a very classy, elegant yet understated manner. The service is excellent and attentive and the staff is very kind and professional. The cruise director is very professional and provides exceptional customer service. The food quality and selection is outstanding. Every meal is delicious and the presentation is excellent. The specialty restaurants are sublime and add to the already large selection of dishes. Our room is spacious and comfortable and very well appointed with a huge bathroom with two showers, a full bathtub and all in marble. The internet works well and exceeds my expectations. I like the fact that specialty restaurants, coffee, soft drinks, teas and juices are included. Aquamar is an amazing restaurant with tasty food and healthy options. Overall we love this cruise and the ship and would cruise on it again. Highly recommended.

The Oceania Marina cruise on this date started in Reykjavik and terminated in Montreal under the banner of Vikings and Bon Vivants, following the trail of Viking settlers to Iceland, Greenland and French-speaking Canada. After Reykjavik, the ship called at Grundafjordur and Isafjordur before crossing to Greenland, calling at Narsaq and Paamiut then a spectacular cruise down the Prins Kristian Sound to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital city. A two-day crossing of the Labrador Sea, (part of day 1 in a Force 9 gale - pills and sick bags available) took us then to St Anthony and Corner Brook in Newfoundland and down the Gulf of St Lawrence, calling at Sept-Isles, Saguenay, Quebec City and Montreal. It was the itinerary that attracted me to this cruise. I had never sailed with Oceania before having previously sailed with Azamara and Crystal. Each of the ports was amazing and spectacular in equal measure, as was the passage down Prins Kristian Sound. At each, we were given a warm and friendly welcome, and we found Icelanders, Greenlanders and French-Canadians to be charming and hospitable hosts. A truly wonderful programme. Pre departure communication from Oceania was excellent, with info and luggage labels provided. Also prior to departure, guests are asked complete an online departure registration form providing passport and credit card information and a photograph, and are issued with a bar-coded embarkation card. Regrettably, none of this feeds into the ship’s systems. On arrival at the port of Reykjavik, we had to complete all of the information, causing very lengthy delays, with several hundred passengers held in a stifling pen while ship staff repeated what had already been done. Really??? It would have been so much simpler, quicker and efficient to have a bar-code reader to scan the info from the form in the passenger’s hand. As to the cruise itself, I (wrongly) expected fellow passengers to be of a younger age bracket (that, for me is 40’s to late 60’s in cruising term) and to be a more adventurous sort of tourist. While there were many outdoorsy types on board, the vast majority were die-hard Oceania cruisers, primarily elderly Americans, who appear cruise for cruising sake. In the prevailing political climate, I was surprised so many would have chosen a cruise to Greenland and Canada. Good luck to them though. Several passengers had an unfortunate attitude of entitlement (if you disagree you’re probably one of them), some were belligerent to crew and quite a few ignored Oceania’s Resort Casual approach to evening wear, preferring a “direct from farmyard to dining table” approach. That’s not to say many other passengers were not elegantly attired in the evening, but the disregard for dress standards by many came as a bit of a surprise. As to the crew, absolutely top-knotch service from all, regardless of rank or location Could not be faulted in any way. Warm, friendly, hard working, always smiling. Cabin attendants were delightful and diligent, and the cabin was always left immaculate. We had a verandah cabin, a tad dated decor-wise with very little closet space and a sliding wardrobe door that kept coming off the runners despite maintenance staff’s attempts to fix it. The bathroom was adequate - bigger than Azamara, smaller than Crystal, with a walk-in corner shower and separate bath. Towels and toiletries were replenished daily in ample supply, with own-brand toiletries. There are self-service laundries on three floors each with three washers and dryers, detergent provided (though you might want to bring your own if you have skin sensitivity). Generally, this meets the needs of passengers but you will get the occasional idiot who leaves their laundry sitting in a washer or dryer for ages (take it out if that happens), and we witnessed laundry room wars on one occasion with a cantankerous old bat complaining she had to wait for a dryer (it’s first come, first-served lady). Of the speciality restaurants, Red Ginger (twice), Polo and Toscana - impeccable service and a very high standard of cuisine. The main dining room - The Grand Dining Room - was a slightly different story. To note, the menu in the Terrace Buffet is similar to the Grand and after a couple of less than spectacular visits to the Grand, we ate in the Terrace on several occasions. So, the Grand Dining Room opens at 6:30pm. Americans tend to eat early. Often a line of approximately 50 people, maybe more with some holding space for friends, would line up outside the dining room before opening. The net result is that those who arrived at or around 7pm faced service delays both for ordering and service while waiting staff and sommeliers tried to cope with the demands of the 6:30pm mass arrival. Food quality suffered on occasion while waiting to be collected from the kitchen to be taken to table. I have suggested on the ship survey that two sittings or a reservation system might be more appropriate but if hasn’t been done already…… Afternoon tea in the Horizon lounge was very pleasant and served by the most elegantly attired and efficient staff (who are also your servers at breakfast, lunch and dinner). Faultless in service and appearance. The Martini and Casino (or main) cocktail bars provide a wide range of your usual and not so usual drinks, a very nice atmosphere with background musicians, and cocktails mixed to varying standards depending on who is the night’s mixologist…but they still went down a treat. Now, here’s a thing….Oceania and some travel agents push the Prestige drinks package - around $70 a day for unlimited wine, beers, spirits (not top shelf) and cocktails. We were advised (incorrectly) by our agent, that all guests in the same cabin had to take the package. One of us drinks, the other not so much but likes the occasional tipple so we bought the package adding some $2000 to the cruise cost. Turns out that most cocktails and wine by the glass were priced around $14. With tax and service added, round that up to $18 a drink, more or less. The wines were nothing spectacular - supermarket standards - Villa Maria Sauvignon, $14 a glass ($14 a bottle in the UK). Slightly annoying was the fact that those not on the package benefit from daily happy hours, sometimes twice a day, in most drinking venues, and once in Canada, Canadian regulations restrict hours of bar operations. Remember, you are able to pay as you go while you drink, so the advice is to question buying the package, especially on a long cruise as it’s charged per day. One of us broke even - but the other paid way over the odds by choosing the package. Another thing to note, shore excursions offered by Oceania are big-time expensive. With a little research, you can find local operators offering very similar tours and experiences at a much cheaper price. Oceania provided two guest lecturers on this cruise, one a historian with an interest in Scandi-Viking history, the other an astrophysicist. Both were excellent speakers, their topics wide-ranging and interesting, and attendance became compelling - particularly on sea days of which there were four in total. Entertainment was….mixed…but the resident dancers and singers received a warm reception and hearty appreciation from passengers. So, would we choose Oceania again? The staff were excellent and, in the main, so were food and beverages. Oceania obviously has its attractions given the high number of die-hard repeat cruisers, and don’t they let you know it. Don’t get me wrong, there was a contingent of “normal” friendly, down-to-earth, approachable and appreciative passengers. That said, the destinations would have to be very interesting to make me choose Oceania again.

Overall, I enjoyed the cruise. There are a few nits I'd like to pick, though. 1. The descriptions of the excursions desperately need to be updated. The rating system for difficulty of walking is the number of tiny little people next to the title. For example, the one we did to Urquhart Castle was rated with 2 people, meaning it was moderately difficult. There was no indication that there is a steep hill down to the visitor centre from the bus parking lot (meaning a steep walk back up), as well as a steep hill from the visitor centre down to the castle itself (meaning another steep walk up). Not knowing this, we signed up. I have a heart condition, sciatica, and arthritis in my knees and ankles. I was so tired and sore, that I was unable to do the following day's bus tour in Shetland. The excursion in Seydisfjordur, a leisurely walk around town with a guide and headsets, was rated as 3 little people. I was very disappointed by the exorbitant rates for spa treatments(I know, this is not unusual, but it still bothers me). Also, when I asked about a massage, the staff persistently tried to upsell me (also not unusual, but also still annoying). I hurt my foot at some point, and was very disappointed to find that the medical centre hours were 8-10 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. Because I didn't know, I missed the morning hours, and due to a dinner reservation, also missed the evening hours. So I suffered for almost 24 hours. On the bright side, the medical staff are efficient and personable, and the facility is well-equipped. Blood tests results were available in just over 15 minutes. Generally, though, the service was great, particularly the room stewards. The wine selection is more limited than I remembered from my first cruise. I am copying my comments to send to the cruise line.
