Ship Reviews

This was our second Oceania cruise and the first on Insignia. We had previously sailed on Marina for a 12 day cruise from Rome to Southampton in May, 2022. When I made the reservation back in January, I knew that Insignia was the oldest ship in Oceania's fleet and that all her sister ships were either new or had been renovated more recently. Then in April I read that she had been sold so I knew Oceania wouldn't be investing any money in updates and it shows. Although the majority of her interior public spaces are fine, there are definitely places inside and out where she shows her age. The blue outside walking track on deck 10 is badly cracked and needs to be replaced. Carpeting in the Horizon Bar, also on 10, is fraying in places. The bathroom mirror in our Concierge level stateroom needs to be replaced as the silvering is badly worn off and I can't imagine that our room is the only one where that is happening. There were loose chips of white paint on the floor of our balcony. When we sat by almost any window and looked at the outside of the ship, it did not look clean and sleek. Some places you could see rust and over the years so much caulking has been added and then painted over, that the finish is really rough looking. One of our favorite spaces on the ship is the library, but once the first case of norovirus was reported two days after embarkation, the library was closed. The whole staff seemed to take the outbreak very seriously and they pulled personel from all quarters to stand at entrances to the Grand dining room and the Terrace Cafe, for example, making sure everyone used hand sanitizer. This included every time we went on or off the ship. One night our room steward left a card on the bed telling us they were going to sanitize the rooms the next day so to put away any personal items that could be damaged in the process. As far as I know, the only activities/events that were cancelled due to the norovirus were the Captain's Welcome reception for everyone and the reception for guests that had sailed on Oceania previously, both of which we were looking forward to. The food was very good in all venues and we really tried to spread ourselves around and tried each venue for different meals. For dinner we ate in both Polo Grill and Toscana twice each, in the GDR five times, and in the Terrace Cafe twice, once for their French Canadian Chef's Market Dinner. We ate breakfast eight times in the Terrace Cafe, twice in the GDR, and ordered room service once, on a day when we weren't scheduled to dock until 11:15. For lunch we ate in the Terrace Cafe and the GDR twice each, in the Waves Grill three times, and were off the ship on the other three days. We had allowed Oceania to book our flights and that included transfers to and from the ship. Our flight into Montreal was fine, we were met inside the airport by Oceania representatives, and didn't have to wait long before boarding the bus to the ship. However, the transfer from the ship to the airport and the flight home were another story. Oceania did not book us on the earliest flight from Boston to DFW. We disembarked Insignia at 8:45am but our flight home on Delta was not scheduled to leave until 7:51pm, 11 hours later, even though Delta had another flight to DFW leaving at 3 something. Who knows how many other airlines had flights to DFW earlier than 7:51pm.! The other problem with our disembarkation came with the cancelation of the shore excursion that Oceania had offered for that day. A form was left in our room about four days before the end of the cruise offering a three hour tour of Boston on the way to the airport. With our 25% discount the cost was $89.00/pp. Knowing we had such a long wait at the airport ahead of us, my husband thought it would be worth it, so we signed up and the charge was added to our onboard account. However, after we disembarked we were told the tour was canceled, that Oceania would issue us refunds, and that they had sent cars to take us directly to the airport. The cruise ended on Monday, 10/27 but the refund wasn't credited to our credit card until Thursday, 11/6, a week and a half later, and that wasn't until I had made a call to Oceania and had several emails back and forth with them, including sending copies of our final onboard account statement which showed the charged tour and a copy of the Bon Voyage statement from Destination Services showing we had "upgraded tour and transfer to BOS airport". Between the flight scheduling and the cancelled tour and refund issue, Oceania created an unfortunate ending to an otherwise mostly decent trip.

Overall the trip was good. Unfortunately on the 2nd or 3rd day the noro virus arrived and a large number of crew and passengers were affected. Many activities on ship were cancelled for the remainder of the trip. Many people spent a good deal of the trip in their rooms. The crew did an admirable job of trying to disinfect and minimize the problem. The food was very good for the most part. Bathrooms are tiny in the rooms on this older ship, otherwise the cabin was very comfortable. The staff from the waiters to the head chef were wonderful to us, whether if be serving us or just visiting. The string duo was outstanding and they usually performed 3 times per day. It was a good trip but the disease did detract from the enjoyment. It is difficult for us to compare Oceania to other lines because we have cruised 11 times on this line and none on others. We began on Oceania and have largely been pleased, especially with the efforts and friendliness of staff.
