Only problem I thought they had was they'd only use the FWD gangway when in port late (Victoria was til midnight, at least two more were til 7:30 pm) and when we are all coming back from excursions at the same time, people are going to the Garden Cafe also FWD, so the elevators were too busy! They should use the AFT gangway in those ports we are late returning! They let passengers on the bow of the ship when we reached the Glacier in Glacier Bay and the National Park Service was there also to help point out the whales, goats and seals that were seen early in the morning. Did like the big (up to 35 people) hot tub in H2O, biggest one I'd seen on any NCL ship. This was the second time did Alaska cruise, first time was 3 years ago on NCL Spirit was smaller.
This was my second sailing on the Joy and my fourth on NCL. I traveled as a solo cruiser. Seattle and Embarkation: I flew into Seattle one day before embarking the Joy and was able to take in some of the Seattle sites on Sunday. I stayed at the Hyatt Place on 6th Ave No near the Space Needle. Would I stay there again - no. Did it meet my needs - yes. I wanted to be close to the Space Needle and the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum and they were an easy walk from the hotel. There is no longer a restaurant in the hotel, nor a bar, so I grabbed dinner while at Chihuly. They did offer a shuttle to the pier for $12 per person. It was a 15 minute shuttle ride to the pier and I arrived at 12:30. A porter took my bags directly from the shuttle and I walked into the terminal. The whole boarding process was extremely smooth. I was waiting for a table for lunch at Savor at 12:50. Twenty minutes from arrival to lunch - I’ve never experienced that before on embarkation day. Cabin: My cabin was ready about 2:45 and bags arrived shortly after. Cabin is a port side solo balcony with the couch by the balcony door. Makes it a bit hard to get into the closet with the bed next to it, but not an insurmountable hurdle. The location of the cabin was easily accessible from both forward and aft elevators/stairs and it was very quiet throughout the cruise. My cabin stewardess was very attentive and brought me a bathrobe, a fluffy balcony blanket, and a coffee pot. She kept the coffee pods well stocked. I found the cabin temperature to be warm so I either kept the A/C turned low or kept my balcony door open, particularly on days at sea. Dining: I had a couple breakfast/lunches in Taste and Savor and one breakfast at The Local. All were fine, and I enjoyed Taste and Savor over The Local. Of the speciality restaurants, my favorite was LeBistro. The quality of the food far exceeded my expectations. The experience at Teppanyaki was a lot of fun and the food was well prepared. I would definitely recommend both of these on the Joy. Cagney’s was a miss, for me, on this cruise. The service was very rushed and my steak was not cooked as requested and was not very flavorful. I’ve been very pleased with Cagney’s on past cruises, so I’m chalking this up to an off night. I was quite surprised by my experience at Q after reading some reviews of it. My server was excellent and it was obvious she enjoyed working in a venue with country music. I ordered the brisket and it was tender, moist, and just plain yummy! And the bread pudding - which didn’t really seem like a bread pudding - was the best dessert I had all week. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at Q and would definitely return. The Manhattan, Taste, and Savor were all fine for dinner. There were no problems and the food was good - they just didn’t wow me. I didn’t dine at the Garden Cafe (the buffet). Bars and Entertainment: Maltings Whiskey Bar was my favorite on the ship with great drinks and nice atmosphere. They offered a Johnnie Walker blending experience on the sea days that was a lot of fun. The other bar worth visiting is the one outside the Cavern Club on deck 8. It was nice to sit outside with a bit of wind protection and enjoy a drink. I saw two shows in the main theater - Wild Cards and Bring Back the 90s. Both were very good, the performers quite talented, and the theater is very comfortable. No magic shows for me this trip but I did enjoy the comedy shows. Ports: It’s impossible to pick a favorite port. They are all beautiful and unique in their own way. We had long stops in every port which allowed for an excursion and time to explore on your own. The weather was absolutely perfect to enjoy each port - usually foggy in the mornings which burned off by about noon revealing beautiful blue skies. I highly recommend Coastal Cheers Connection in Ketchikan if you are not taking an NCL excursion. I took this from downtown Ketchikan to the ship and it was a lovely one hour cruise that returned you right to the ship. I booked it through NCL. I booked all of my excursions through NCL and I will post specific excursion reviews on pages for the ports. I have no words to describe the day in Glacier Bay except pure beauty. Disembarkation: This went as smoothly as embarkation. My luggage tag color was called about 8:45 and I was in my ride share shortly after 9:00. Pier 66 in Seattle is the most efficient terminal I have ever experienced. Overall my cruise on the Joy was amazing. The ship is beautiful and well maintained. The crew was very accommodating and friendly. I really have no complaints about my time spent enjoying Alaska.
My wife and I have sailed frequently to Alaska (this was our 10th) all on different ships and 5 different lines. We previously sailed to Alaska on the NCL Pearl, Jewel, Bliss and Encore before this Labor Day sailing on the NCL Joy. The NCL Joy nearly identical to its sister ships, the Bliss and Encore. We stayed in a 2 bedroom Haven suite. Our cabin, was spacious, well organized, and well maintained. Our Butler Peter and steward Mario did a great job taking care of us. The 9 day itinerary gave cruisers an extended visit at our ports - Icy Strait Point, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria. The weather cooperated, although fog was noted in the mornings, the afternoons were beautiful. Our cruise went to Glacier National Park which was another treat. Food on the Joy varied from OK to superb. The biggest weakness was the buffet, I thought the limited selections and lackluster taste was challenging although the variety of scooped complementary ice cream was a nice touch. Overall, the buffet was not as good as Royal Caribbean, Princess, or Celebrity cruise ships to Alaska. The Haven restaurant was great, and they now have a daily lunch and daily dinner special starting on day 3 of the cruise which was a nice addition. As Sapphire level guests with the more at sea package we had 6 speciality restaurant dinners. I thought my favorite meal was the Lobster Bisque, Rib Eye Steak, and Apple Pie dinner at Cagneys (went there twice). Teppenyaki was fun as always, but it was very loud in the restaurant. I had the fishman's fried platter at Ocean Blue which was good. Both my wife and I enjoyed the California and Tiger rolls among other dises at Food Republic (also went there twice). Entertainment was good, the production cast was quite talented in their musicals. I enjoyed the Beatles Revolution band, but the Cavern Club became quite crowded and many guests couldn't see the band outside of their theater show. Alan Sheppard and Inna Berestova were quite good with their piano shows. The Joy's gym was well equipped with many cardio machines. The track (8 laps to a mile) provided a great place for a scenic walk/run. I spent mornings swimming laps in the pool - The Main pool is 11.1 yards long, the Adult only pool is 9.8 yards and the Haven pool is 7.8 yards. All of the pools opened at 7AM daily and I found myself alone swimming laps at the opening. While our relaxing cruise had no surprises, the ship sailed full and did not feel overly crowded. I would be happy to sail again on the Joy.
This was our second time on the Joy, and everything was as expected. We are two adults with no children, so we have no opinion on the more family-related portions of the ship; however, we were very pleased with the adult-oriented entertainment. The Beatles Revolution was excellent. WE saw all their shows in the Theater and woudl have ried for their shows in The Cavern, but the times did not work for us. The comedians were funny at the opening show, and we did work to catch Crystal Powell in the Social for her 18+ show. She did not disappoint. Saw the 80s and 90s shows. We were a bit old for the 90s material, but I expected that going in, and we enjoyed both. Frankly, we did not miss having a Broadway production as the last time on the Joy, they presented Footloose, and the show was interrupted by a passenger emergency, and then a second time, which resulted in the cancellation of the show due to a performer's injury. The BAMboozled and Murder Mystery games were entertaining as well. Our balcony room steward met all expectations and did not fail to please. The room was cleaned/made-up daily and she was sure to keep us supplied with tissues as my wife had a cold during the trip.
Only problem I thought they had was they'd only use the FWD gangway when in port late (Victoria was til midnight, at least two more were til 7:30 pm) and when we are all coming back from excursions at the same time, people are going to the Garden Cafe also FWD, so the elevators were too busy!
