My sister and I stayed in a balcony cabin. I have stayed in these cabins before and there is a lot of room for two. Our beds were next to the slider door. Perfect spot. I slept fine, but my sister has a bad back so she woke up with a low back pain. She found out that in the afternoon if she laid flat on the sofa, it felt good. I bring my own shampoo and conditioner. The body wash smells blah and luckily I brought my own. There are plenty of places for our clothing. Temperature was perfect. There were plenty of activities to do, but this is the reason I gave it four stars…….Many of those activities are held in the atrium. There are not enough chairs for the activities. We passed on on a few since I didn’t feel like standing the whole time. We did not have specialty dining and we ate in the MDR, Savor, O’Sheehan’s, Noodle Bar, and the American Diner. All were fine for us. If you want to go to the noodle bar and it is complementary, make a reservation. Thankfully, the entertainment was great. I knew to get to Sid Norman’s early to see the “night at the prom,”, since on another ship, it fills up fast. that show is fantastic. We loved all the shows except for one. One problem we saw was in the theatre. The staff were not accommodating for those with walking problems. The ship is easy to find where to go. I have been on the Joy and the escape and found it was a lot like those ships. The tenders were easy to get to. But as we watched guests going on top of the tenders, it is a huge safety hazard. Be careful, and if you can, don’t even go up there. There won’t be any staff helping at all. All in all, I will return to this ship. It was a good time.
Great cruise on the Getaway - 10/5 The NCL Getaway "leaf peeping" itinerary was great fun. The crew are generally dedicated to their work and try to be responsive to guest concerns, with very few exceptions. Our club balcony suite cabin on the 8th floor was spacious, and the egg crate topper on the mattress added by our room steward made us feel like we slept on a cloud. Balcony had room for 2 chairs, a table, and a lounge chair. We utilized it a bit less this cruise because the cruise was port intensive to start with sea days toward the end, and the weather turned a bit drizzly when at sea. I like to grab breakfast from the buffet for my wife and I to enjoy on the balcony, but the location of this cabin in relation to our room made that a bit difficult - it'll have to wait till the next cruise. Maybe eventually, we'll pay the charge for room service, but NCL's limited menu options as compared to other lines doesn't meet our needs for breakfast. As far as the food, many of the venues on the sailing were actually better than I remember on this ship, and her other sister ships with similar dining venues. This is a credit to the chef and restaurant manager. Our meal at Cagneys was what we've come to expect from the NCL steakhouse venue. But one note - the bacon appetizer before COVID used to be served on a clothesline, tasty and whimsical. Now, it's two thick pieces of fatty bacon without much imagination on presentation. Skip it. Better options were the jumbo shrimp cocktail - still great, and crab cake still worth it. Steak there is still consistently great, with my wife's ribeye outdoing my filet. I noticed no "ounce" listing for the cuts of meat anymore - cost cutting? But no worries, size was still more than adequate for dinner. The "OMG" cheesecake and raspberry creme brulee did not disappoint. If you don't use one of your specialty dining perks at the sushi venue Wasabi, you are missing out. The tuna volcano and sushi dishes were terrific, and the yakitori beef might be better than the filet I had at Cagneys! Clester was our waiter there, and was very helpful getting my wife into her hightop chair. But, a note from a couple who have cruised a long while, and a lot with NCL. My wife is short, and this venue has only hightop chairs for seating. It was annoying at first, it's inconvenient now, and will be a barrier to eating there in the future. It is right next to Ocean Blue, which has plenty of normal seating - i hope you can designate one or two of those outdoor or indoor tables to serve that venue. Speaking of Ocean Blue, both Nikki (maitre d) and Nikki (waiter) were very accommodating and made my wife's birthday special. All of the apps were great - and yes, because of NCL's new policy, we tried them all! We did miss the cheesy bread they used to have. For my main dish, my seafood cioppino was better than I remember the last time I had it, with delicious large chunks of lobster and a mountain of other seafood in a tasty broth. My wife's grilled seabass was also great, and we had amazing key lime merengue pie, cheesecake, and chocolate sorbet for dessert. Our lunch experience in the main dining room started off great because of Pamela - she remembered my wife's name from a prior restaurant - great job! Standard fare hasn't changed since we dined there last, and the meatball app, monte cristo sandwich, and pasta were highlights. The buffet experience was also very good. Breakfast was standard fare, although I recommend you try the congee once from the asian section. And the best pork product was the bratwurst - try and hunt that down instead of the standard stuff. The time for buffet breakfast on the schedule says it ends at 10:30, but served past that consistently on one half of the buffet, which I appreciated. Also, they kept a breakfast sandwich option on one tray even after 11:30 am when they started serving lunch. Lunch buffet had really good meatloaf, chicken korma at the Indian station (it had consistently good stuff), Moroccan spiced chicken at the carving station one day, great roast pork leg with crispy skin on another day, great vegetable fritters, great beer braised beef stew, and great Asian stir fry station plus an Asian mushroom noodle soup spooned over fresh veggies, where you could add beef meatballs and a bunch of other stuff. Add macadamia and rum raisin ice cream for dessert, and it was overall a great experience. Small flaws were the corned beef hash for breakfast (meat cubes were grisly and hard to eat), and a pork cutlet on the buffet that was quite dry (i got it at 11:20 when lunch was just being served, so it was prepared that way). La Cucina, the Italian venue, was also very good experience- Maitre D Zende and waiter Gede were excellent. Although the calamari was lukewarm, the rest of the apps tasted great especially the pasta fagioli and spaghetti carbonara - nicely al dente. For our mains, the pork scallopini was in a delicious sauce, and the lamb shanks osso bucco was excellent. The panna cotta and lemon cheesecake for dessert is the way to go - trust me on this (the tiramisu is available as dessert for lunch in MDR - almost as tasty) As far as missteps, during dinner service in the main dining venue Taste, they had forgotten some our apps. We asked to eat them with the already delivered mains. I'm glad because the baked brie pastry and warm apple salad was very well done - perfect contrast of savory and sweet. The table of 5 or 6 next to us also had issues with their meal service as well and were placated with some sparkling wine - so it appears our issue may not have been a "one off". Our dinner in Manhattan was a great ending because of our waiter Jefferson, who was very attentive. With NCL now charging an extra $5 for a second entree, that charge is easily avoided by asking for an appetizer portion of a main dish- the pasta dishes are easiest if you want to sample something without having a whole main course, and i did that twice with a puttanesca dish and a shrimp alfredo dish. Finally, our waiter Joy was a joy in the other Main dining venue Savor on disembarking day for breakfast. Talent in all venues was excellent- seating was quite hard to come by at times. It's good that the shows are so good, but sometimes, you'd like to be able to sit without having to queue for a half hour to see them. I saw some shows that were repeated like Wild Cards did not have this issue as badly. Thankfully, the Syd Norman's band did their Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" show in the main theater for 2 shows, so hopefully everyone got a chance to see them outside their normally small venue. Bar service was responsive for the most part, although my wife and I wanted luxardo cherries for our Old Fashioneds, we had to make do with maraschinos - very first world problems! Casino staff was extremely helpful, although bar service a few times after 11pm was close to non-existent. My wife's experience in the smoking casino was the same, perhaps with less responsive service, and her complaints about many of the machines having no sound could not be addressed all week. The ports on this itinerary were enjoyable, although we discovered that if there's no sea day in the first one or two days of a cruise, things seem a bit "go, go ,go" so keep that in mind if relaxing is the goal. Highlights were the Breakers mansion in Newport, and Peggy's Cove in Halifax - although we opted for private arrangements in both places instead of the ship's big buses. The Duck Boats in Boston were a good time, but construction in several areas that normally don't have those issues caused a lot of re-routing for us and a lot of other sightseeing tours. But, you may want to consider your own seat cushion - the chairs did not agree with my 56 year old posterior. We had been to Bar Harbor before, so when we saw it would be raining most of the time we were there, we opted to relax on the boat. One thing I should mention - the crew works extremely hard and should be commended, but a rare few cabin stewards and other staff don't smile when encountering guests or responding to their greetings of "good morning"" or "good evening". The smiles are important, even if they're fake! Disembarkation was good, until you attempted to access the transfer that NCL had provided at a cost of $49 per person to La Guardia. Wow - this needs to be handled better, as there were huge masses of people attempting to get on these busses, who didn't have assigned berths, so giant masses of people waited in lines that seemed endless, while others who moved past them to get out of the crush of people ended up on buses before they did. They were also still selling those transfer tickets in the terminal on the way out to the buses - not sure if that's a good idea, either - something needs to change there. Taken together, it was a wonderful vacation, and after learning a few things, we'd have an even better time if we do this itinerary again
