Norwegian Star Reintroduced
If you think you know Norwegian Star, think again. Recently refurbished as part of The Norwegian Edge programme, the ship underwent extensive enhancements to its staterooms, public spaces, restaurants, bars and lounges.
Good things: Our cabin steward Subash was always smiling and positive. Cabin was very clean. Negatives were the noise from above (not enough to regret choosing the cabin), the safe wasn't scred down, the closet light was awkward (but at least there was a light) and the balcony door was difficult to open. There was also often a whistle when were were sailing that drove my husband a litttle crazy. We moved to the Versailles Dining Room for most dinners (The turkey medallions were the best meal I had aboard!) after first dining at Aqua, which we found too noisy and crowded. The buffet had very good food offerings, but was usually so crowed it was not a pleasant experience. The smoked meat sandwich at O'Sheehans was really tasty and we appreciated the option. Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro, and Moderno Brazilian were the only specialty restaurants we dined at, and the standout was Cagney's, although I fellt it was in poor taste to charge extra for an after dinner specialty coffee when the restaurants already have a significant cover charge. I hate being wasteful and was unhappy that ALL of the sides were served at Moderno. We really only wanted one or two. I speant most of my time at the Spice Bar (Aft Starboard) where it was usually quiet and the bartenders (Bryan and John) were great. This boar was also close to the Adult only area with hot tubs, which we enjoyed several times during the cruise. Negatives: On the first night we arrived at the theatre 20 minutes before show time and was refused bar service as it was shut down five minutes before curtain. (I did notice there were more bartenders in subsequent shows). Quality of the main stage shows was good. Staff weren't asking patrons to adhere to the posted rules. Some examples: there was a theatre announcement "show starts at seven & doors will close at that time." People were still coming in throughout the show. Very disruptive and potentially dangerous given it was an arial act. On another night there was a child in the second row during a magic act that wouldn't shut up. This is despite the announcements every evening telling parents/guardians that no chicldren were to be seating int he first two rows. The buffet was never a pleasant experience as people didn't clear out after eating, so it was always a zoo. Notices on the tables clearly stated that guests were to use other venues for playing cards/reading/whatever. Baseball caps being worn in Versailles (and not just one or two). Again, the dress code doesn't ask for much, but baseball caps were supposed to be removed.
