I sailed the Jewel out of Philly on 8/6/26 with my 20-something son on a casino promo. We had just sailed the Prima in May, and I wasn't planning on taking another cruise this summer, but the promo offer and the convenience of being able to drive to the ship made it all just too easy and I couldn't resist. I'll start my review with the negatives - there really aren't many - then I'll get into all the things I really liked about this cruise. I am a balcony diva, but I elected to keep the inside stateroom I was offered and spend my $$ on other things. We had stateroom port FWD - my favorite location on any ship. The room was small, as expected. The beds were separated, and there was a padded stool at the desk. Those were the only places to sit. The closet had plenty of room for clothes but not for stowing suitcases, so they went under the beds. The shower was a good size, but the toilet was tucked into the corner on an angle. I am 5'2" and it was a tight fit. A larger human will have a difficult time. At night we could hear what sounded like dryers running. It was muffled and not incredibly loud but definitely audible. It usually cut off around 11PM or so. One night we were hearing a weird metallic sound we couldn't identify - like springs popping. It only happened one night. It didn't cause any real problems for us, but it might be an issue for light sleepers. You know those fishies in the hallway carpet that swim toward the front of the ship? Or the triangles in the carpet that point toward the front of the ship? Jewel doesn't have that, which is an issue for directionally challenged people like me. Jewel does not serve Veuve Clicot by the glass, even if you have Free at Sea+, and not even in Le Bistro. You can get it only by the bottle. And none of the bars are fully stocked and serving until about 9PM on embarkation day when you reach a certain distance from the coast. The entertainment on this ship is not nearly as good as on other ships. The shows are mostly song and dance type, and the live music around the ship definitely skews to snoozy, easy-listening type stuff. We did see a magician performance our last night, which we enjoyed. But most of the cruise, I felt like Ricky Bobby running around the racetrack yelling "Help me, Syd Norman!!" I found the ship to be in very good condition despite her age. Some might say she is outdated - I say she is classic. Yes, she has some "old-fashioned" features you will never see on newer ships. The ceiling feels a bit low in some (not all) areas. But she was refurbed in the last few years and is kept immaculately clean. While Jewel does have a kids' club and a teen club, I would think twice about bringing kids on this ship. The arcade is a sad, cramped little room. There are no water slides, splash zones, ropes courses, rock walls, or mini golf courses. While certainly not hostile to kids, there are other ships in the fleet with much more to offer children. The food overall was good, except for the pizza in the buffet, which was terrible. NCL just does not do pizza well in my experience. Our favorite restaurant is Cagney's, which we do every cruise. The food in Cagney's was excellent, as always. We had the crabcake, filet mignon, garlic mushrooms, and chocolate cake. All excellent. The service, while not terrible, was kind of meh, though. We had FAS+ and ordered Aqua Panna for the table. We finished the first bottle and asked for another. Our server poured from the second bottle, and then took it away. So we got flagged on water? I have no idea. Moderno was the overall winner on this cruise. The food was excellent, and our server was attentive and friendly. Very good variety of food, excellent quality, fun experience. Make sure to try the grilled pineapple! Le Bistro was excellent as well. My son tried escargot for the first time and really liked it. My coq au vin was so tender it fell apart with a fork. Very flavorful. The Ile Flotante was a unique and delicious dessert. We ate dinner in Tsar's Palace only once. We both had the shrimp alfredo with linguine, and it was very good. One thing I really like about this ship is that the specialty bars are all clustered in bar city. You can get any kind of drink there at one bar or another. You don't have to trek halfway across the ship to get a martini for yourself and an old fashioned for your companion (like on the Prima). Even though our sailing was sold out, it never felt really jammed anywhere - again, unlike the Prima. We had no problems getting loungers on deck 13, a short walk down the stairs to deck 12 and the pool. I had no problems getting on my favorite slot machines in the casino even though there were only 4 of them. The buffet is huge, so no problem getting a table there. Never had a problem getting a seat in the theater for anything. The crew on this ship, overall, was excellent. We encountered so many friendly, helpful crew members. We found the organization and direction on this ship far superior to that of the Prima. Cruise Director Brynne has a very good all-female staff who did a terrific job with the Not-So-Newlywed Game, The Perfect Couple Game, and the Mr. Sexy Legs contest on the pool deck. Shout out to the CruiseNext Director, Victor, who got Mr. Sexy Legs started with his own performance! The overall vibe on the Jewel is more chill and relaxed than on other ships. There is always something going on somewhere, but not all things are interesting to all people. And there aren't 100 different things going on at the same time in different places to choose from. This was great for me because I like to factor in a bit of relaxation among the fun and adventure of a cruise. But if you are the kind of person who needs to be on the go every minute, you may want to choose a larger, more exciting ship. One last thing, which will be good or bad depending on your perspective: Jewel is much friendlier to smokers than some other ships. There is no designated smoking vs. non-smoking section in the casino, one can smoke anywhere while gambling. Most of the time it did not smell smoky because they do a good job ventilating it with fans. And the Pit Stop on deck 13, just above the adult pool, allows smoking. I have previously sailed only on the Escape and the Prima. Jewel offered a very different "feel," which I really enjoyed.
My wife and I recently sailed on the Norwegian Jewel from Philadelphia to Bermuda and Halifax, NS. We had a fabulous time, and I want to cover all aspects of the cruise, including the ship and related details, the ports, the Philadelphia cruise experience. I will start with the most important part: the Jewel. Overall, we loved our experience. We live in central Pennsylvania and love small to mid-size ships, so the presence of the RC Vision in Baltimore and now the NCL Jewel in Philly are perfect for us. We have sailed bigger ships with our children (Oasis and Disney Dream for example), and those probably have more to offer families, especially with younger children. These ships, however, are perfect for us as they afford opportunities to relax and enjoy some time together. This was our first cruise with NCL and it was a great experience. We have sailed more often with RC in the past, and as I go through, I will do some comparing and contrasting as we found advantages/ disadvantages to each. I will go through specific aspects. 1. Cabin: we had interior cabin which is an interior aft, starboard cabin. It was quiet, as i no noise from above or below. It was small, even for an interior cabin, but it worked. It was nicely updated, especially as it has an actual glass shower door. Most importantly, it was kept immaculately clean by our AMAZING cabin steward Ryan. Ryan went far out of his way to make sure we had the perfect trip, including running down a coffee maker for our room along with an ample supply of coffee pods. Thank you Ryan! 2. Vibe: we decided to splurge on a week pass to the Vibe beach club. One thing we love about Royal, especially its older ships, is the adult area called the Solarium. NCL charges for its equivalent: the Vibe. We paid around $550 for two of us for the week. That is a steep price, but it was cheaper than an upgrade to a balcony, and a better deal in our opinion. I have read complaints that the Vibe on Jewel is awful because, unlike bigger ships, it does not have its own pool or bar. That may be, but compared to the mayhem around the main pools, it was paradise. We never had to worry about finding a lounger. More importantly, John (the Vibe attendant) worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone up there had a perfect experience. I am quite humbled by how hard he worked. During sailaway, 30 of us wanted to have a toast, so he made a run to the bar to get 30 shots. We were constantly provided with cold towels, fruit skewers, ice cold water, and drinks. I wish that NCL had a free adult area, but, for us, this splurge was well worth it. 3. Drink: here is where NCL is the clear winner over Royal. We took advantage of Free at Sea Plus. There are two (alcoholic) drink packages available. For free at sea, you basically have access to a large selection of liquor, wine by the glass, beer, and cocktails, and you only pay the gratuity (around 20 per person, per day). Free at sea plus costs more, but also includes internet, unlimited starbucks, bottled water, soda, gratuities, and top shelf liquors. We had to buy internet for various reasons, so it made sense for us to do the plus package. Each of these is well beneath what Royal is charging for our cruise next summer, which would almost double the cost of our cruise. We do not drink much (especially compared to people who complain about Carnival’s 15 drink a day limit. Wow), but the Plus package worked for us. Furthermore, the bartenders were happy to make whatever we wanted, however we wanted. Also, we almost never had to wait for a drink. If I can make a recommendation: visit the mojito bar in Moderno restaurant, even if you are not eating there. Work through the delicious menu. It is a hidden gem! 4. Food: the food was, well, fine. This is more a reflection on larger trends in the cruise industry, however, than it is a slight on NCL or the Jewel. We did not eat anything bad, but we also did not eat anything amazing. We ate one dinner in the MDR which was honestly as good as most of our four meals in the specialty restaurants. Most will likely disagree, but our favorite specialty meal was La Cucina. We had a great experience at each meal, mostly due to amazing service, but the food was good, not great. 5. Service: as indicated by my earlier comments, the service was outstanding. The crew on Jewel was perhaps the highlight of our trip. Everywhere we went, we were constantly greeted by staff. Whether in our cabin, on the Vibe, in restaurants, or in a bar, the staff were kind, hard working, and efficient. They are a reminder of why we love cruising. Cheers to the Jewel staff. You are amazing! Ports: 1. Bermuda: this was our third visit to Bermuda, having first gone there for our honeymoon 29 years ago. For us, it is the perfect cruise stop. We disembarked at 10 am and were in port until 3 pm the next day. A huge perk of sailing to Bermuda with NCL is the free ferry to St. George’s. We have done Horseshoe Bay multiple times, and we love it. This time, however, we decided to take advice from a video we watched and go to Cooper’s Island nature preserve, which is a collection of perfect, uncrowded beaches on what used to be a U.S. Naval base. If you are sailing to Bermuda on NCL, this is a MUST do. It was the weekend of Bermuda’s national holiday, and we feared that we might find crowds. We did not. Here is what to do: take the NCL (or Bermuda public) ferry to St. George’s, hop on the $7 (each way) shuttle to Clearwater Beach (ask around when you get off the ferry. You’ll find it). Ask your driver about pickup. They will almost certainly set a pickup time and place that you can count on. There are public bathrooms at Clearwater Beach. You can also grab some great food and drink at Sunjammers. We had a great time talking with the staff, who were delighted to share about Bermudian culture. You can swim there at the beautiful Clearwater Beach, and even rent an umbrella and chairs. A better idea is to ask the bartender for advice on finding a good beach in the nearby nature preserve. There are 5 or 6 perfect beaches in there, and there will likely be almost no one on them. Fellow cruisers said you could barely move on Horseshoe Bay that day. We found maybe 10 other people in the entirety of Cooper’s Island. 2. Halifax, NS: we were only in port there from 7 am until 1 pm, so it did not allow much time. We decided to just get off the ship and walk around a bit. It is a lovely city, and there are many restaurants and food stands within easy walking distance of the port. Much of it seemed to cater to tourists, however. I would love to have a longer visit and take in more of this lovely city. The highlight of this was the sail away. Get a spot on an upper deck for the 30 minutes or so that you will be sailing out the harbor. The Canadian Maritime coast is incredibly beautiful. My wife is a native New Englander and grew up spending summers on the Maine coast. It is lovely, but she thought this even eclipsed that. Philadelphia: I will keep this short. You may have seen videos online about the nightmare that was the first cruise from Philadelphia and the unfinished port. Due to this, parking and check-in has been at a nearby hotel, and cruisers are shuttled to the nearby cruise port. Apparently, the port will be available starting on the August 20 sailing, but it sounds like you will still need to park elsewhere. To put it mildly, they have made great progress on the process. Parking, check-in, and transportation were a breeze. From car to ship on day 1 took maybe 45 minutes, and we walked off for our own bags and were at our car in about the same amount of time. Everything about it went smoothly. Overall: We had a great trip. I get that some people prefer the spectacle of newer ships that are basically amusement parks at sea. We grabbed this cruise at $599 a person (they were as low as $499 at one point) as NCL was basically giving them away, presumably due to the bad press. We could not have stayed at our local Holiday Inn Express for what we paid, and that would only include breakfast.
My husband (David) and I (Carol) took our first cruise on NCL earlier this month. They recently started sailing out of Philly, and that's really convenient to our South Jersey home. We enjoyed this cruise! Embarkation: OK, so they don't actually have a port building yet, which is not terribly convenient. We had to check in at a hotel whose ballroom was converted to a massive winding line of cruisers eager to get on the ship. Parking at the hotel was available with an option to pre-pay and I paid $112 (for a 7-day cruise) a couple of days before the cruise. Warning about the so-called parking lot--it is full of potholes and broken glass. Hopefully the parking lot at the new pier will be an improvement. We were assigned a check-in time of 12:30 and arrived about 12:15. The line was quite long and it took about an hour to get through it. My husband, who has really bad knees, was able to find a seat in the ballroom and waited for me there. It would have taken a lot longer if one of the port employees hadn't directed me to the "ADA line" for people with mobility issues which was a lot shorter than the regular line. David had contacted Norwegian before the cruise to ask about accommodations for folks with mobility issues and was told there were no "priority" accommodations available to seniors unless they paid for priority embarkation/debarkation (which he declined) or otherwise qualified for it by loyalty or cabin status--but he was still able to sit while I stood in the ADA line until it was our turn to get our cruise cards. From there, we sat in another ballroom until a bus arrived for a 15-minute shuttle to the ship. There was no line to board and we got on the ship at about 3PM. We hoped that the MDR would still be open for lunch (so nice that it is open on embarkation day, unlike the other cruise lines we have sailed with!) but it was already closed, so we headed for O'Sheehan's. I'm not sure if the buffet was still open, but I like to avoid the buffet on embarkation days because it always tends to be overcrowded and crazy. O'Sheehan's is open 24 hours and we found an open table immediately, so we had waiter service and some decent Reubens in a nice pub atmosphere. It was about 3:30 or so when they announced that cabins were ready. Cabin: Pleasant surprise! I am a (former) balcony snob and I had never booked an inside cabin. Our cabin was small but there was plenty of closet space and storage for the 2 of us. The shower was actually much larger than any that we had on other cruises and there was plenty of shelf space in the bathroom. David said he missed having a balcony (not being able to see what the weather was and not being able to drink his morning coffee outside), but I was just fine with it. Dining: Some hits, some misses. Anyone ever order Eggs Benedict only to have them arrive looking like they'd been sitting around for awhile? That has happened to me on RC and Carnival (until I got wise and started ordering them with the sauce on the side). NCL served me perfectly runny poached eggs for 5 days in a row--boy was I amazed at consistently perfect Eggs Benedict. Other memorable dishes include a scallop au gratin appetizer (excellent!) and lamb shank dinner entree (rich and delicious). David said the burgers at lunch were great although they looked too well-done to me. All the desserts I ate were excellent. The menu in the MDR was not extensive but I don't recall ever leaving there hungry or without finding something that wasn't really good. I was sort of surprised that they didn't actively offer coffee after dinner but if you ask for it they will get it for you. I was not as impressed with the buffet, which was small in comparison to the larger ships we have sailed on. Their breakfast omelet stations were fabulous but the rest of it was mediocre. We did not visit the buffet for lunch so I can't comment on it. We did walk through the buffet during dinner hours to see what was being served but we always opted for the MDR instead so I can't comment on the buffet's dinner service. I was quite surprised to see a whole suckling piglet on the carving station one night and I have to say it looked pretty good! Overall, we enjoyed the MDR the most. There was a secondary MDR, Azura, which served the MDR menu but in a different, more relaxed venue, and we had dinner there a couple of nights and enjoyed talking to cruisers who were seated closer to us than in the MDR. Ports: our stops included Bermuda and Halifax. On the first day of Bermuda, David took the free dockyard trolley and did a few stops at the dockyard that didn't require a lot of walking. I took the complimentary NCL ferry to St. Georges and walked around a lot. Tip: if you take the complimentary NCL ferry, go up to the second floor and the seats are much more roomy and comfortable and the air conditioning is much better. It's about a 50 minute ride to St. Georges, and the ferry drops you off in the thick of things. I walked to the "unfinished church" which is really stunning. Then I walked around the shops--there were beautiful artist shops that were wonderful. I ran into a great vintage shop, "Checkmate Vintage", where I bought a previously loved Swizzle Inn T shirt and a pair of real Bermuda shorts. On the second day that our cruise was docked at the Naval Dockyard in Bermuda, my husband and I took the free dockyard trolley; it does a fairly short circular route around the popular spots in the dockyard and it stops very close to the ship. He stayed on and I got off because I wanted to go to the Dockyard Museum and Commissioner's House. I was impressed--and saddened--by the displays that described the harsh conditions of the early seafarers and settlers and the role of slaves that were so critical to the development of Bermuda. There's a lot of history to learn about if you don't mind a lot of walking. There's also a dolphin pool and you can swim with them for an additional fee. I hitched a ride on the free trolley and got back to the ship well before our 3PM sailaway. After a sea day, we arrived at Halifax at 7 AM. Our sailaway time was 1 PM so we didn't have a lot of time--most businesses opened at 9:30 or 10, so we left the ship at about 10 and walked along the harbor. We didn't do much, although I would have liked to have gone to the Maritime Museum if we had more time. Oh well, maybe next time! We stopped at a brewery near the pier that featured Canadian beers and enjoyed a draft at 11 AM...breakfast of champions! Entertainment: the magician was very entertaining and he had 2 different shows that we went to. I went to the "Welcome Aboard" show and it was just ok. We went to the first broadway-type show and left after 10 minutes because it was way too loud and not very good (David's Apple watch was warning him that the decibel level was over 90). We did not return for any other musical shows. The quality of the shows was not on par with the shows we have seen on RCL. The entertainment in the bars was very good. We enjoyed the various music that was presented during the day and early evening. We didn't go to any late-night parties so I can't comment on those events. We also didn't go to trivia, bingo, or other usual daytime activities. We did not get the drink package because we are not big drinkers; I had only 1 traditional gin martini from the martini bar after dinner one night and it was REALLY strong! Nice! Service: Very, very good. The cabin steward and dining staff were very attentive and deserve credit for great service. Something else I wanted to mention: I expected fewer kids on this cruise because it's a smaller ship and doesn't have a thousand slides and bumper cars. There were a lot more kids than I expected, but I have to say that most were very well-behaved! (Am I the first person to say this on Cruise Critic?). Congrats to the parents who did not allow their kids to run rampant through the halls at 2 AM or push all the elevator buttons. I avoid the fitness room and the spa at any cost, so I can't comment fairly about those things. I did notice that there were many spa events that appeared on the daily planner and when I passed by the gym, it looked decent and the folks using it looked understandably miserable. We enjoyed this cruise! It wasn't perfect, but it was relaxing and there seemed to be something for everyone to enjoy. I am looking forward to cruising again from Philly with NCL!
