Once again, the stars of the cruise were the staff. At every level, from our cabin attendant to the dining staff, these hard-working people could not have been more welcoming and helpful. The ship is a smaller one, a feature we are hearing more and more travelers prefer. The downside to this is that there are fewer venues for evening music or just lounging with friends for an after-dinner drink. The Gatsby’s lounge was quite popular and we at times couldn’t find free seats. But that tells you that such lounges are what people are looking for….a bar, waiters and usually live music. But it is very close to the casino and the smell of smoking was drifting through all the time. And even the outdoor smoking area above the pool deck was only enclosed by 2 bamboo partitions. The atrium area is not very large and much of the space is taken by the Starbucks cafe…better to move the cafe elsewhere and use the space for more evening music or daytime events. The largest indoor area we found was the Bliss Lounge with its dance floor and plenty of seating. But it is better suited for a dance event than an after-dinner stop. We didn’t get to any of the poolside evening events, so I can’t tell you about them. I’m probably dating myself, but we senior cruisers still enjoy dancing, but too often the dancing parties didn’t start till 10 pm. And after a day of snorkeling or river tubing at one of our stops 10 pm was too late. We ate 5 nights at the specialty restaurants…Le Bistro 2X, Cagneys 2X, and Teppanyaki once. And they were all great. The 2 meals we had at the main dining rooms were frankly disappointing, though the service was terrific. The Garden Cafe buffet had plenty of choices for breakfast and lunch. We had a balcony cabin on Deck 10. It was a bit smaller than many other balcony cabins we’ve had (this was cruise #23 on NCL) and the bathroom was quite small…but the biggest problem was that there was only ONE outlet and no USB ports in the room. I realize it’s an older ship, but that has to change. My husband and I had to take turns using the outlet. We brought along a multi port USB Anker charger, but my new IPad is a USC so I needed to plug in to the outlet. Disembarkation went smoothly. In speaking to other cruisers during and after the cruise, quite a few had complaints, but in most cases these people had not done any pre-cruise reading of the itinerary, or didn’t bother to read the details about disembarking…”I thought I could put my luggage out by 8am the morning we docked. No one told me it had to be put the night before”.
