Ship Reviews

This was our second cruise on MSC Meraviglia., and we have been on over 20 other cruises with other cruise lines. We went on the Meraviglia last August and decided to give it another try, but this time tried the Aurea package. By far, the cost is what lured us in both times. It's significantly less. I am loyal to Royal but when it comes down to the cost, a similar intinary and same dates were double the price for both vacations, so we opted to go with MSC. MSC is different in comparison to Carnival or Royal Caribbean. On those ships you had a few choices for complimentary (free) dining aside from the main dining room and buffet such as hot dogs or deli sandwiches. Additionally, on those other lines there was plenty of activities throughout the day. This seems limited on MSC as most of the activities were at the pool or at night (some of the night time parties didn't start until 10:45pm!). Embarkation both trips was simple and we were on the ship within 30 minutes both times. Each of us packed all our clothing in separate carry on size suitcases (20-inch) and each had a backpack. I did see some people carrying on larger luggage (25 inch?) but I was hesitant as the luggage you carry on needs to fit through the X-ray machine. When you get on board, your cruise card/key is located on your cabin door. You are able to drop off your things even though the cabins aren't fully ready/cleaned until about 1:30-2pm. Although it took several reminders to our room steward and a phone call to guest services to get toilet paper! Usually an extra roll is stored in the cabinet beneath the sink, but low and behold we had none! Thankfully we received two rolls at 4pm. Cabin- had balcony both cruises with MSC. Found there is less storage space on MSC as compared to other lines. I travel with collapsible hangers and magnetic hooks which help. There is a blow dryer in the desk drawers. Outlets (USB, European and American) are only along the one cabin wall (opposite the bed/sofa) so bring longer charging cables or a cruise approved extension. Food options in the buffet are plentiful and a variety from vegan, Asian, and other cuisines. Pizza is good for a cruise ship. Food choices in the main dining room are basic for breakfast, lunch, dinner and sea-day brunch. There are a few speciality dining spots (steakhouse, sushi/teppinyaki, seafood, pub, and Mexican restaurant) but we only tried Hola tacos. I recommend you make these reservations as soon as you board. Last cruise we tried to book Hola on our second day on board and they could not accommodate us (a party of 3) at all on any of the remaining days! As for the food, tastes are subjective. Let me preface this by saying that I love to eat and I will try most anything, so I am not a picky eater by any means. However, the food on MSC is NOT one of my favorites - is it edible? Yes, but I've had better tasting foods on other lines. For an "Italian" cruise line, I found the Italian selections were few and far between and rather bland and boring - which I guess happens when cooking for over 5,000 guests. I do have a food allergy (peanuts) and the staff was diligent on the first night in the dining room. Subsequent nights sometimes the supervisor would come to our table and review my order, other nights not at all. In the buffet, I found the staff did not know if certain items contained peanuts. I generally know what foods to avoid but there were some Asian dishes I saw which I wanted to try but looked questionable, so I avoided them. Cleanliness, overall the ship is clean, even the public areas are kept tidy. I hate using "public restrooms" but after one very long excursion I knew I could not make it to my cabin and used one of the public bathrooms on Deck 6. It was very clean! Overall, the staff on the ship are friendly and will say hello anytime passing by. Even with the anytime dining we could sit with the same waiter each night. He knew our names by the second night, knew we would like a bucket of ice for the table, and remembered our drink orders from the previous night, asking if we wanted the same. On our previous cruise, our waitress was non-attentive and didn't make any attempt to be personable - not even saying hello, just "are you ready to order?". At first we thought she might have been having a bad day but this attitude was consistent for the entire 7 nights. Aurea experience: enjoyed the little perks such as the thermal spa, Top 19 Solarium (sun deck), and anytime dining. Would definitely do this again for the anytime dining as on MSC, if you have a fixed time, early could be as early as 5-5:15 and late could be as late as 9:45pm. Shows - theatre shows need to be scheduled (even the free ones), although they do have a standby line for those without a reservation. You can reserve times though the touchscreens throughout the ship, or in the MSC app once onboard. There are usually 2-3 showtimes each evening for the free shows. There are 2 shows that you can pay for, Rock Circus and Houdini. You can purchase these pre-cruise and then book a time once onboard in person at the seafood restaurant. We saw Rock Circus - which was good. Would I pay to see it again? No. Disembarking- we carry off our own luggage. Last cruise there was announcement for these guests around 7am to proceed to Deck 5. This cruise we opted to go downstairs around 6:30am only to discover the this line had already begun without any announcement. So we were off the ship and through customs before 7am!
