BOOKING: Pricing for the TAs was really good at time of booking 1 month before the trip. The round trip TA from Southampton was not really discounted, but putting 2 voyages together meant we got an obstructed balcony (priced the same as ocean view) for about half the price. It meant changing cabins in New York but this was an easy process and we even kept the same steward EMBARKATION: We'd stayed overnight at the Voco and use their cruise and park deal. We arrived at 1230 at the Mayflower terminal and were in our cabin 1 hour later with bags already outside. We'd not managed to print any documentation other than the bag tags, but had uploaded everything to My Cunard. We still had to get a boarding pass from Pod 1 and show our ESTA at check-in. New photos are taken for everyone. Service from the terminal staff was efficient and excellent. CABIN: We had starboard obstructed view deck 8 cabins near stairway B (mid fwd). We liked the classic decor but the bathrooms are dated (shower curtain) and the 2nd cabin had the shower thermostat and on/off valve transposed leading to poor pressure and temperature control. The storage is good but the bedside lights are fixed (taking up space) and could easily have a USB fitted. We asked for the mini-bar to be emptied (wish that could have been requested pre-cruise) and the bed configuration had to be changed to that booked, meaning lots of extra work for the cabin steward. The balcony was useful as the air conditioning was not very powerful and we loved sleeping with the door open when weather conditions allowed. The location was excellent - 1 floor down to the buffet and Carinthia Lounge and 1 floor up to our favourite Commodore Club. On the nice sea days we used the deck 8 terrace and bar behind the Verandah Restaurant. FOOD: We had 2 birthdays on the westbound crossing so booked the Steakhouse for the first evening. This was relatively quiet and we paid the supplement of $20 (over the $54 pp cover charge) for the amazing seafood platter as a starter. The steaks and sides were incredible. For last night, we booked La Piazza and felt the ambience was not as special as it's part of the Chef's Galley, albeit with table cloths. We felt the menu and cookery was not worth the additional dining premium. We ate on Gala evenings in the Britannia and had freedom dining (upper level). We joined the virtual queue using My Voyage at around 1845 - this seemed an ideal time as all early diners were seated and we missed the 1900-1930 peak. We always got a private table for 2 and found food and service was excellent. We also had breakfast a few times in Britannia and enjoyed the uprated service. Our favourite food venue was the Carinthia Lounge. We loved the small plates at breakfast and lunch and although they had no sandwiches, we felt the the cakes at the afternoon tea were superior (we just got a plate of sandwiches from the adjacent buffet). You have to pay for juices and teas/coffees unless on the drinks package and I think this mean this venue was much quieter for food. We also loved the Scandinavian open sandwiches in Sir Samuels. We found the lunch in the Golden Lion OK to good and it's a shame this venue does not have food at night for casual diners. We found the buffet a little too busy, especially as it is a thoroughfare in poor weather. The food was reasonably good but we would have liked to see the menus beforehand so we could have made a decision on dining venue in advance. The buffet was served by the chefs for the 1st 72hrs of each crossing and we found the staff quite stressed during this period. We enjoyed the complimentary room service for breakfast and a number of dinners on our 2nd week when we did not want to get changed again. We found the food quality excellent and although the menu was relatively limited we always had hot food served promptly. DRINKS PACKAGE/BARS: The advantage of 2 voyages was that we did not have to initially decide on the taking the drinks package for both weeks. We pre-booked the 1st week (@$72 pppd) and took full advantage. We would normally make do with the included buffet hot drinks and juices but instead made the most of ordering fresh juices, smoothies and speciality hot drinks for breakfast in the Carinthia Lounge. We found that the $13.50 package ceiling for alcoholic drinks a little restrictive for some things like Martinis, which could not be ordered or any of the Commodore Cocktails. However the Chart Room had lower priced cocktails in the day and we loved the Iberian wines/ports/sherries in the Carinthia. As a G and Diva, it was a little absurd to have to order Queen Elizabeth 2nd's favourite drink by getting the gin first and then waiting 10 mins to be allowed to order the Dubonnet. At least you could order double spirits (very wide choice) and premium mixers. The Cunard House Wine (private label) was actually really good and all bars were happy to serve a large glass, despite this being against the complicated Ts and Cs. Also it was the 1st week of the 15 alcoholic drinks pp being digitally monitored on the sales device. This meant 2 key cards were always needed to order, so you could not get 2 alcoholic drinks in advance for you partner if they were joining you later. Only 1 card was needed for soft or hot drinks and in the restaurants. Service in the bars was always prompt except the mad busy sail-away from Southampton where staff were overwhelmed by the numbers due to the amazing weather. For the 2nd week we took the drinks package from the 2nd day as we had been ashore on the turnaround day so paid 6 days @$80 pp. Overall we made good use of the package and it was good not to have to sign a bill for each order. ENTERTAINMENT/ACTIVITIES: We are not really interested in the production shows but loved the variety of entertainment in each venue as we would not normally listen to a string quartet or big band or harpist whilst having our cocktails. We enjoyed a few quizzes but did not utilise the spa or gym. TECHNOLOGY: The My Voyage function which you use on board was not an app and was pretty useless. Other than booking dining/virtual queue, the only thing we could access of use was the daily programme but you had to log on each time and it did not remember your unique login details. This meant we were given a lot of paperwork each day which could easily be reduced for those happy to use tech if functioning correctly. We wanted a semi digital detox, but I did purchase the red bull eSIM in advance and this proved great value compared with the on-board WiFi (I paid Euro 30 for 2MG of data which was sufficient for light browsing and WhatsApp messaging for the 2 week voyage). There were too many pre-cruise emails for us and entering our details in My Cunard was quite clunky. OVERALL SUMMARY. The competitive pricing allowed us to enjoy this bucket list trip. The ship is beautifully Art Deco in style and very stable in all weather (we went from 25c sun to force 9 winds on the outbound crossing). The crew are superb, with great training and high service delivery standards. We enjoyed the ambience, like an old fashioned grand London hotel with silver cutlery and Wedgewood China. We did not feel that the dress code was too onerous and it did help to create a lovely atmosphere. Clearly the competitive environment means lower lead-in prices for some trips with a cut back in some service areas (complimentary room service was removed after our crossing for lower cabin grades) and focus on ancillaries. We don't feel that Cunard is super luxury but rather old fashioned (in a good way) and elegant. We always prefer sea days so the TA was ideal for us for a relaxing holiday.
This was my first Cunard cruise. I've previously sailed on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Holland America and Azamara. Last year, we sent our two daughters on this Independence Day cruise, and they enjoyed the Cunard experience so much, they wanted to come back this year with me and my husband. After taking this cruise, it would be difficult to go on a Royal Caribbean ship again. The QM2 is all class and elegance! There are no towel animals, no hairy chest competition, no singing and dancing waiters. This is chocolates on your pillow at night, bathrobes and slippers in your closet, fascinating lectures, a harpist or a string quartet playing in the bars, ballroom dancing, formal nights, and napkins with silverware waiting for you at your table at the buffet! However, despite the upscale vibe, there is something for everyone. We enjoyed dancing to the party band Clique every night and listening to the great DJ at the G32 disco. The ship itself is a destination; just walking on the decks and sitting on a wooden deck chair watching the sea and the fog was a pleasure. The ship is like a museum, filled with "exhibits" relating to the Cunard Line's rich history. Embarkation was easy. We took the NYC Ferry from Wall St. to Red Hook, and the ship is a short walk away. We saw other passengers doing this, too. The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal was not well air conditioned the day we boarded. They also make you fill out a customs form while standing in line. Also, even though we provided photos for our online check-in, they had no record of them and we had to have our pictures taken at the terminal. Our oceanview cabin on Deck 5 was small but comfortable, with ample storage and cozy bed linens. This ship offers turn down service in the evening -- something you don't get on other lines. Dining in the Britannia Restaurant was an elegant experience. Our waiters, Luis and Reggie, took very good care of us. The food was delicious and portion sizes were perfect. The desserts were incredible! We also enjoyed a very tasty pub lunch in the Golden Lion. The buffet? I found it confusing, being that there are two buffet areas. I also thought that the buffet selection was smaller than on other ships. In addition, it was sometimes difficult to get a worker to clean and turn over the table-- but the best thing about the buffet was free sushi! The bars serve delicious and creative cocktails. The well-stocked library is not to be missed! Also, remember to make a trip to see the captain and his staff on the bridge. There is a window you can look through to see everything and Captain Hashmi will give you a wave! The entertainment was excellent. We saw 3 specialty acts -- Elenka Cello (she played the electric cello), a Carole King tribute group called You've Got a Friend, and comedian/musician Tom Franek. But the two production shows featuring the singers and dancers were among the best I've ever seen! These performers are incredibly talented and their shows are not to be missed! Our entertainment director, Amanda Reid, was just lovely and welcoming. Because this was a special 4th of July cruise, we were treated to a deck party in Boston where we could view the fireworks. They had loads of American food favorites and a huge screen on which they showed the Boston Pops concert. The QM2's "White Star Service" is first class! However, as on other cruise lines, it's a little harder to break the ice and get to know the crew members better (maybe because we are chatty Americans?). But by the end of the cruise, we got to know everyone better, and we left as friends. Disembarkation was super-easy. We got off the ship and easily found our color-coded luggage. Final thoughts: I've read comments from previous Cunard cruisers who complain that the QM2 is not what she used to be. I am enthralled by this ship, its beauty, its history and its service ... and I can't wait to return!
