Ship Reviews

We took a pair of cruises originating in Miami ("in-transit guests" for a total of 21 nights. Western Caribbean followed by Eastern Caribbean. We have cruised with several lines. Cunard was good, not as good as some others. Positives: The Queen Elizabeth is a beautiful ship and was meticulously cared for. Service was excellent, especially at dinner in the Britannia, alternative restaurants, and Verandah. I had to go to the medical centre and they took good care of me there. The excursions we booked through Cunard were very good, very organized, and took the amount of time promised. Negatives: Lack of English Beers in the English (Golden Lion) Pub. Lack of ambiance in the "alternative dining" spaces. They were held in the regular Lido area so were not decorated to match the menus. The Verandah steakhouse was a dedicated space and so was very nice. We were surprised by the considerable amount of motion on the ship at all times. We have been on other cruise ships, large and small, and the motion was far, far less. The first week of our trip involved time changes between Eastern Daylight time, "ship time," and Central time. Communication by the ship as to which time zones were being observed when was not adequate. Many people were confused, and we missed an activity because of this lack of clarity. The disembarkation process seemed like it would be organized, but was in fact rather messy. When we entered the terminal it turned out we had to stand and look for and pull our own bags off of a carousel, similar to an airport. This is not what other cruise lines do. They pull all the luggage off and organize it in the terminal by colored tags, so you spend very little time looking for your luggage. I have a food allergy and the dining rooms worked hard to accommodate me at dinner. Breakfast and lunch were more problemmatic.

Having loved the atmosphere on QM2, it was an easy choice to try QE from Miami. Nearly everything was stellar! Boarding was calm and smooth. First stop, the cozy English pub for fish and chip and pints. Received a warm welcome from my cabin attendant. Up next, a fun sail away party on the large aft pool deck which is flanked by shaded, cushioned seating areas. Be advised, anyone in their sixties will be the younger of the demographic. A total of 6 children were on the ship, reportedly - hooray - and no yelling or profanity, or constant canned music. No crowds and plenty of space! Entertainment and musicians were mixed. The much-anticipated production show “Come From Away” hit a nerve, “entertainment” based on the worst terrorism attack on American soil. The majority of the audience seemed to love it, though. Food and beverage were well- presented. As with other cruise lines, the crew is eager to have you satisfied, merely ask. With the QE based in the USA this season, the wine list had to be redone, sadly. However, most of the Cunard-branded options are quite good. As a solo traveler, my total outlay for 12 days, including drinks (and a t-shirt) was $2500.

My only regret related to my cruise on Queen Elizabeth is that I didn’t book the back to back cruise and sail for an additional nine days. This was my first cruise on Cunard and it proved to be an experience beyond my expectations. The embarkation and debarkation processes in Miami were the best and quickest I’ve ever experienced at any port terminal. Neither process took more than 20 minutes. Once on board I was immediately struck by the beauty of the ship - from the Grand Lobby to the elevator doors, floral arrangements, Royal Theater, Queens Room, and the list goes on. Cabin: My cabin, a balcony on deck 5, had plenty of storage, a couch, and felt quite spacious. It was convenient to the aft staircase/elevators. The coffee/tea equipment was in the closet and I needed to ask my cabin steward for the coffee and tea, which he brought the first evening. (The coffee was instant Tasters Choice and was actually OK). Dining: My assigned dining room was Britannia. The servers were attentive and friendly. I always found dishes that I enjoyed. I was particularly fond of the strip loin, the white onion soup, and the celeriac salad. I also dined in the specialty restaurants including Verandah Steakhouse, Bamboo, LaPiazza, and Caribe. Both dinners at the Verandah were amazing as were my meals at Bamboo and Karibe. LaPiazza was fine, but nothing special, in my opinion. The Lido Grill, outdoors by the pool, was consistently good - especially the onion rings. I also enjoyed the Wellness Cafe. Coffee at Cafe Carinthia is not to be missed! Entertainment: Come From Away was performed on evening and it was a stellar performance. I had seen it on stage in my hometown and this performance was far superior. I had reserved a box for the evening and enjoyed champagne and a selection of small sweet treats during the show. The entertainment on the other evenings was not too remarkable but was enjoyable. During the days the Royal Court Theater was the location of Cunard Insights, guest speakers providing on board lectures. Ports and Shore Excursions: The Eastern Caribbean itinerary included San Juan, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Maarten/Martin, and Tortola. I booked Cunard shore excursions in each port. My excursion in San Juan was not as described on the website and was very disappointing. On the other had, the excursions in St. Lucia and Tortola were excellent. Barbados and St. Maarten/Martin excursions were fine, but I would probably remain on the ship if I were to return to those ports. Common Areas and Bars: I found the Commodore Club, the Admiral’s Lounge, and the Garden Lounge to be nice areas to relax, read, and enjoy a cocktail. My favorite, however, was the bar in Cafe Carinthia with friendly and skilled bartenders and baristas. Daily tea in the Queens Room as very enjoyable. I preferred the Lido Pool over the Pavilion Pool, most because it smaller and quieter. I am looking forward to my next cruise on Queen Elizabeth.

We have cruised on most cruise lines and this Miami to Caribbean Cruise came up at a really good price, so we thought lets give Cunard a try ! So glad we did, this was our very best overall cruise we have taken. We consider a good cruise based on 3 main ingredients Service food entertainment The Queen Elizabeth gets 10/10 on all 3 points. She is a beautiful ship, in all areas. we loved the fact that at no point was the ship too busy , you could always find a sunbed/chair , always get a table at the Lido cafe. We ate in the Britannia Main dining room, we loved our experience, always got a nice table for 2 which is our preference. Waiter service always good. Theatre nights were varied and very professional , plus the west end show Come from away which was amazing. Thank you Cunard we will b e back ....
