Ship Reviews

My wife and I recently returned from a glorious cruise on the Celebrity Apex (June 5-17) that left from Southampton, visited Bruges, hit six ports in Norway and traversed the Arctic Circle. Why this cruise, our 31st? Bruges has been on our bucket list for years and Norway is our favorite country to visit – we’ve been there on three other cruises (but never this far north). However, this review focuses solely on our impressions of the ship. We are great fans of the Celebrity Solstice class, but this was our first cruise on the Edge class. What follows are some positive highlights and several negative impressions. POSITIVE HIGHLIGHTS Veranda Stateroom It seems folks either love or hate this major innovation. We loved it. First, it makes the stateroom feel (and actually is) larger. When the top window is totally down, you do feel like you’re outdoors, you hear the waves, you get some breeze. It’s more private. Yes, this opinion may be skewed because we were sailing in very cool weather; perhaps we may feel differently in the Caribbean. I think not. The pluses would outweigh any minuses. A big thumbs up from us. The Crew Yes, it’s their job to be friendly, helpful, smiling, joyful. Yet, the Apex crew in all areas of the ship far exceeded those expectations. Special call outs to our stateroom attendant Henderick and dining room waiter Ronald; they were outstanding. Eden At first, I found this venue so different I called it bizarre and was uncertain if I liked it. But quickly over time, it grew on me as a really cool place to view the passing scenery surrounded by funky chairs, various levels and offbeat décor. It became our go-to place for pre-dinner drinks. Walking/Running Track Power walking on the track in the mornings is one of my favorite cruise pastimes. The Apex track made this even more enjoyable. Unlike most cruise tracks that simply go in a circle on the deck looking down on the pool, this tracks meanders and curves through additional areas and on two levels thanks to a slightly incline going forward and a slightly decline headed aft. It also covers more distance than others, I believe; 4.5 laps for a mile. Destination Gateway I think that’s what they called the area on Deck 2 where we usually left the ship when in port. It was the most pleasant area in terms of aesthetics I’ve experienced on a ship and the flow of passengers getting off and on excellent (at least when we there). SOME NEGATIVE IMPRESSIONS No Inside Viewing Area in Front of Ship! This is a major design flaw, in my humble opinion. Unlike the Sky Lounge on the Solstice class or the Viking lounge on Royal Caribbean ships, there is no area on a top deck (like 14) inside with big windows to enjoy the ship cruising forward. Maybe you get one if you’re in the fitness room. I also think if you book a suite, you may get that view. But not for the 95 percent of the rest of us. Yes, you can view both sides and the aft from Eden. But not in front. What a disappointment! Really Crowded Another design-related negative. I’ve never experienced on a cruise such crowds in the public spaces. Now, some of this may be due to the fact that during the very cool weather, no one was outside at the pool and elsewhere. But the crowds were evident at night as well. One reason perhaps? There was, in my view, a lot of wasted open space throughout the ship. Long halls to the main dining rooms, a long hall adorned with strange art leading to Eden, tons of space in the guest relations area. Yet we’re on top of each other in Café Bacio, Eden and the Martini Bar. And often seats were difficult to find in the theater. Main Dining is Strange Celebrity Apex heralds its four separate, distinctive dining rooms for main dining. To me, this is a failed marketing ploy. Decors aren’t all that different. Celebrity plays up the “exclusive” menu items for each room (Tuscan for Italian, Cyprus for Greek, etc.), but you can order anything from any menu at any time. The greater selection is a plus, but just give us one menu. And stop saying this is some great experience. And on that subject… Food Was Mediocre Not a disaster at all, but the food, especially the meats, was underwhelming. But we give the bread and pastry chef high marks! Reserving Seats for Suite Guests Yeah, I guess if you spend tons of money, you get privileges. I find it annoying when seats are reserved for suite guests in the theater. What I found appalling was reserving seats at the senior officers party in the very crowed Eden for Elite and over members. In this case, we all were in the same “class.” FINAL COMMENTS One final comment is we have no comments on areas we did not frequent, including the shows. In terms of the ship…the Edge class I guess is too “edgy” for us and we found its design (except for the veranda stateroom) not to our liking. We won’t be returning to an Edge ship. Yet, the cruise easily met our expectations even though the bar was set high because of our love of Norway. The scenery was breathtaking. Standing on the most northern piece of land in Europe unreal. Saying we’ve been to the Arctic Circle really cool. Hiking to waterfalls in Flam and Geiranger a joy. A great trip.

We recently returned from a 12-day cruise aboard the Celebrity Apex to Norway, and we can confidently say it was the most enjoyable cruise experience we've ever had. From start to finish, everything exceeded our expectations. The entire crew—from Captain Nicholas to our incredible Butler Mark and attentive Room Attendant Francis—went above and beyond to make our voyage comfortable, smooth, and memorable. Their professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. Having only cruised four times before, this experience truly stood out as the pinnacle. The Apex itself is a beautifully designed ship with plenty of space to explore and relax. Whether you’re looking to find a quiet nook or join in the fun, there’s something for everyone. The entertainment onboard was excellent, and we loved the variety of restaurants available—each one offering something unique and delicious. I especially enjoyed the sketch class and the evening shows, which were top-notch. If we had one suggestion, it would be to include more art and dance classes, as well as informative talks about the local culture and destinations. These would be a fantastic addition to an already stellar itinerary. Overall, we give this cruise a 10 out of 10. Thank you, Celebrity, for an unforgettable journey. We’re already looking forward to sailing with you again!

Our first time on Celebrity but definitely not our last. We cruised with 6 in total - 3 early 60's and 3 early 30's. We have done RC, NCL, and this was by far the best cruise we have been on. Activities - many activities you can participate in or not if you just want to relax - many people napping in the Solarium on sea days. However, there were many "young" adults on there as well 30's and 40's - few kids. This was not a "senior" cruise but did have a chill, relaxed vibe. Also, the captain was the most visible captain I've seen. He participated in all evening shows and spoke with the guests frequently. Service- amazing - cabin stewards would look to see when you were gone so they could service your cabin - definitely twice daily service. In restaurants, the staff was personal and attentive. The bars, they knew your name - really great and hardworking staff. Mention them by name when you do your review. It really helps their status to move up. Cabin - loved it - bed super comfortable and lots of room. We loved the infinite veranda - some don't. It made the room feel larger and it was more private. I can't tell you how many times I've been on a regular balcony and you can hear everyone's conversation around you. Also, the bathroom and shower were great and you didn't feel stuffed in the shower. My only suggestion would be to add magnified makeup mirrors. Dining - OK to amazing. We loved the Roof Top Grill (does get cold up there) and the steak house. Eden was good as well but I didn't love it as much as the hype. Buffet - lots of choices and main was always good. Entertainment - lots of great singing and dancing but I will say I missed the big Broadway type shows Bruges, Belgium- charming town - we walked on our own and took the canal ride. TIP - we took a taxi to the city center but most only take cash. You need Euros for this. It was 60 one way for the 6 of us. Also, do the canal ride early and don't stop at the "first" location. If you look down the street, there may be boats with no line. People tend to stop at the first stop. We walked two minutes further and got on immediately. They all follow the same route. Flam, Norway - Buy your train tickets online - you will be on the same train as the people who paid 3xs as much AND the train is a 5 minute walk from the ship, allow a least 2 hours round trip so don't book a late train, queue up about twenty minutes early and sit on the right side of the train. The people who booked through the cruise will be in different cars but there will be plenty of cars for those who booked online. Gieringer, Norway - We did the RIB boats which was fun. I would also love to do the little electric cars and drive to the top but they were sold out so we did the waterfall walk. It was beautiful. I would do this port again. It was stunning! Bergen, Norway - We walked to the fish market/shops and the Funicular. It was not expensive and nice to walk around. This was our shortest day so couldn't spend too much time. Overall, my favorite cruise line and ship! The itinerary was beautiful. It was stunning scenery, and I would definitely go back.
