We just returned home from a beautiful trip on the Rhine in late August early September. We got very lucky that the weather forecast for the 14 days we traveled was completely wrong prior to leaving. The weather forecast was rain every day but to our surprise, we only had a few sprinkles that never Interfered with any of our activities.. so don’t panic if you see a bad weather report!
One of my recommendations would be to take Ama waterways up on their Pre and post offer, it was completely seamless. They found us at the airport, transferred us very professionally to our hotel, helped us to check in and guided us every step of the way throughout the entire experience, all the way back to the airport at the end of our trip (4:00 am) everything was communicated through their app on a daily basis and made us feel completely comfortable and worry free.
We did book a suite on the boat and glad we did. We had so much room in both the living area and bathroom. Some small things that you’re thinking about were taken care of, such as a nice hairdryer provided as well as your choice of different size curling irons were also offered to us from the front desk. Every single hotel they booked for us had a magnified mirror for the ladies and hairdryers. We were provided nonstop water throughout the entire trip, and all hotels and the ship, included shampoo, conditioners, both liquid soaps, and bar soaps. I know these are some of the things that people have asked in the group chats. Our suite also had bathrobes and slippers. We had 4 pillows on our bed and they were very flat/deflated. We asked for 4 more a bit fuller and they quickly brought in several with different thicknesses. So don’t be afraid to ask!
Upon arrival on the boat., You will find a portable headset on a lanyard with a brand new earpiece for your use the entire trip, in your stateroom You will not need any other extensions or headpieces. We did find that our cell phones did not connect to the provided plugs next to the beds and we were able to purchase a small USB to C adapter at a local store also a tip is if you are starting your trip in Amsterdam there is a very large department store similar to a TJ Maxx right outside your hotel and you could pick up anything that you may have forgotten or find that you need.
My next tip would be if you find out that your boat will be docked in one of the ports into the later evening. Stay in that town and enjoy dinner at one of the local Restaurants. We followed the tour exactly and went back to the ship each time with our tour guides to eat on the boat and were sad or disappointed when we saw others arriving back to the ship around 8 PM and told us what a wonderful time they had eating in town. We did not realize that that was an option. All you need to do is let your tour guide know that you’re going to get yourself back to the ship all of these towns are were walking distance and not difficult to find at all.
Our only low about our trip was that the tour guides spent way too much time in detail on trivial things such as statutes or wars that had occurred in the past and left us with no free time in almost every town. We were very disappointed when there was zero opportunity to go into a shop/store/restaurant or explore on our own, even though the description of each tour always said there would be free time. In every case there was zero time or maybe five minutes which they were rushing you back to the bus. We did let our cruise director know this and she said she was aware that this had happened often. If I was to do it again I would have just parted the tour and headed off on my own free time knowing I had to be at the bus at a specific time. Those tour guides are locals and very knowledgable and happy to talk all day. They do a great job but it’s your vacation and you are not being rude if you speak up and let them know you are will meet them back at the bus. Trust me, you will have regret if you don’t get to do something you really wanted because you were afraid to walk away from another historical structure.
(I wanted to mention the laundry on the ship was amazing. They would pick up your clothing in the morning and return it by the afternoon.)
We only packed a carry-on and I found I did not use three or four items, so don’t worry about taking too much, there are million stores and shops along the way that you could sneak too quickly and grab something if needed.
Ladies, I’ve seen so much discussion on what to wear. Here is what I observed: each day most of the woman wore loose Athleta or Lulu style yoga/walking pants. (Not the skin tight ones) along with a zip up jacket or medium weight rain coat. Most wore great super comfy sneakers like sketcher or ON. Everyone had a crossbody including many of the men. Lots of cute scarves were used day and night for not only fashion but on the neck when the mornings were chilly. The boat provided umbrellas. Once back to the ship, most everyone changed their clothes (contrary to what I had read) the woman would put on a cute casual outfit in either slacks, skirts or casual dresses. Same as you would wear to a normal restaurant back home. The men wore mostly slacks that looked to me like the stretchy golf pant style and polo or button down shirts. Only a few people wore jeans and they were usually very stylish. I did not see very many baseball hats on the ship nor off the ship. It was not the norm. Yes there were a few, and no big deal. Ladies shoes: one pair of great sneakers, one slip on for the boat and one nicer wedge style for evening. That’s it! Nothing else needed! Men only need their walking shoe and a casual shoe for dinner.
Knowing what we know now, we are very glad we did the Amsterdam to basil direction because the last stop at Lake Lucerne, which was our post add-on, heading to Zürich, was our favorite three days of the entire trip they took us on a boat tour of Lake Lucerne and a cable car up Rigi Mountain Switzerland, which was the highlight of our trip.
To AMA, if I could make one suggestion to Ama, it would be to offer room service! A few days into the trip we were so exhausted and breakfast buffet was over at 9:30. We were dragging ourselves downstairs and noticed they were cleaning up the buffet by 9:15 and wouldn’t let us in. It would have been nice to be able to have breakfast brought to our room about then. A couple of mornings we missed eating and there is no food available on the ship until 12:30. They offer a teatime in the afternoon however they do not put out any tea’s or snacks, You have to sit down and order it and it takes a while to get that didn’t make any sense when your advertising teatime. Lastly, as a suggestion, we noticed they served the same exact items over and over again on the upper deck and honestly, they weren’t good.
Overall, our experience was fantastic. I give our experience a solid 9 out of 10. We made several new friends that we know we will keep in touch with, and we will definitely return on another Ama waterways cruise to a different region.
